Abbey Invitation Tournament

Each January, Abbey holds an indoor invitation tournament at Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre, with clubs from across the south of England. The 2007 tournament was held on Sunday 21st January and despite being drawn in the more difficult of the two groups, Abbey turned in some strong performances. Lack of competition at this high standard was telling though, and the team did well to clinch 4th place from the 5 teams in their group. A plus point for Abbey was that they didn't lose their games by large margins, and netted approximately the same number of goals as those teams who won their groups. A lot to work on, but excellent practice for the remainder of the season.

Oxfordshire Versatility Tournament

This year saw two Abbey squads entered into the Oxfordshire Versatility tournament, in an attempt to win both the shield and plate. The trophies have proved elusive over the past few seasons with unfortunate 'bib-draws' in the finals being the downfall for the club, and the girls were determined that this would be their year. The day turned out to be a success for both the A and B team, both making their respective finals, but unfortunately the curse of the versatility tournament struck again and both were unlucky to lose. There's always next year.....

Jersey Open Tournament - Day one

This year was the first year that Abbey visited the Jersey Open tournament, entering two teams with a total of 19 players traveling. Unfortunately injuries kept Jo Davies and Lesley Williams from playing but their umpiring skills were greatly appreciated! Day one saw Abbey A finish 2nd in their group, which was hotly contested, their losses only resulting from very tight games, and the wins being convincing ones. A win over SAS at the end of the first day was the highlight, Abbey A's clean approach to the game proving to be a better tactic than that of the opposing team.
Abbey B went into the tournament as underdogs and excelled themselves on day one, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the top group on the second day.

Jersey Open Tournament - Day two

Day two was full of hope for Abbey A, who were well placed after day one to qualify for the Semis. They started the day with a fantastic win over the tournament favourites Convent. Unfortunately, a combination of the previous night's social activites and some interesting umpiring saw them lose narrowly to St Clement A, a team they had lost to on day one but who they out-played on day two. Heads went down and the next game was lost to Daggers purley due to mistakes made by Abbey. The girls went on to win two more games but lost the remaining three. Again, the group was hotly contested and no team maintained a perfect record and so Abbey only just missed the Semis. Several players from opposing teams commented that they had expected to see Abbey in the finals, a testiment to the excellent skills displayed by the girls throughout the weekend. Convent went on to beat SAS in the final, both teams beaten by Abbey at some point over the weekend.

Abbey B were unfortunate on the second day with some of their results, as the moves they put together were fantastic to watch. This team was made up of a combination of the Oxfordshire league B and C teams, although it was difficult to tell that they were not an established team. As with the first team, they started with a convincing win but were unable to continue their form throughout the day. Two wins and a draw from the eight games was an excellent effort from one of only two B teams participating in the tournament, and the B team girls can certainly draw from the experience of playing such tough opposition. It is also worth mentioning that several of the girls turned in their perfomances of the season over the course of the tournament.

A vote undertaken by all nineteen girls saw Cath French win player of the tournament for the A team, and Sue Kent for the B. Congratulations girls and I hope you're all still able to walk over the next few days!
