The Society was founded in 1973 to promote awareness of and conservation of archaeology, local history, heritage and artefacts.

Where is Didcot?

Didcot has a population of nearly 25,000 people and is a growing community in the Thames Valley of south Oxfordshire’s rural countryside and close to the Berkshire Downs and the City of Oxford.

History

Its original Saxon name was Wibaldinton which was changed to Dudcota or Dudcotha and up to the 1900’s Dudecote. The oldest building in Didcot is All Saints Church and there is evidence of Roman and celtic finds that suggests settlements here in the late Iron Age. The Stonor family built Dudecoote Manor in the mid 14th century and were the leading landowners until 1671 when their properties were forfeited.
Didcot was developed after the arrival of the Great Western Railway in the late 1830’s and with the arrival of the Army and Ordnance Depot and the Power Stations converted a small rural hamlet into the modern bustling town as it is today.
Didcot was originally part of east Berkshire was absorbed into South Oxfordshire by the reorganization of local government boundaries in 1974.
