(Above) Presentation of cheque and CDs, DVDs and Playstation games to Douglas House at our dance.

LAST UPDATED 12th May 2008

Welcome to the official website for the Elvis Presley Fan Club, Oxford Branch, founded in 1977.

TO JOIN OUR MAILING LIST OR CONTACT US
elvisoxford@hotmail.com

We are registered and recognised by Graceland as an official Elvis Presley Fan Club.

We come from all walks of life in and around Oxford. We meet socially about once a month and some of our members attend Elvis functions both in the UK and America.
We also raise money for local charities, although there is no obligation for any member to do this.
------------------------------------------------------------

National Fan Club now online at www.elvispresleyfanclubuk.co.uk

Lots of other Elvis sites can be found at
www.elvisdirectory.co.uk

Copied below - part of a letter received from Helen Cordiner, Fundraising Administrator at Helen & Douglas House:
Dear Jenny,
I am writing to thank you for the Club's generous donation. As always the Elvis Presley Fan Club never fails to amaze us with its wonderful donations, particularly this year with £3000! I can't tell you how grateful we are for all the hard work you put in each year to raise this money. The dance was a great success and Jacqui and I really enjoyed ourselves, along with everyone else! It was also nice to be able to bring the gifts back for the children and guests. Helen House really appreciated all the CDs and DVDs and obviously the Wii was met with much enthusiasm at Douglas House.
-----------------------------------------------------------

The return of the Elvis Presley Fan Club's all day Convention on Saturday 10th January 2009. Details on National Events page.

If there is enough interest from the Oxford area we will look into running a coach but need to fill it to make it affordable so let us know if you would use this.

------------------------------------------------------------

WE WOULD LIKE TO SEND OUR WARMEST CONGRATULATIONS TO SISTER FRANCES DOMINICA ON BECOMING WOMAN OF THE YEAR. IT WAS SISTER FRANCES WHO SAW THE NEED FOR A CHILDREN'S HOSPICE IN OXFORD AND SET ABOUT RAISING THE MONEY TO BUILD ONE. 25 YEARS ON THERE ARE NOW OVER 40 IN THE UK AND THEY ARE SPRINGING UP WORLWIDE. WE ARE THRILLED TO BE ABLE TO HELP LOCALLY BY FUNDRAISING FOR HELEN AND DOUGLAS HOUSE.

-----------------------------------------------------

Billy Gallacher (of Billy and the Bonquas) who sings at our annual dance, has just won a local hero award from his local radio station in Buckingham shire, Mix 107, for Volunteer of the Year for all his fundraising and work for the local hospital scanner appeal. Well done and well deserved Billy. Picture on www.mix107.co.uk

30th Anniversary Report from Jenny, our Branch Leader.

I’m really proud of the publicity we generated not only for Elvis but also for us as a branch over the anniversary period.
Radio Oxford had an Elvis Week with a section each morning. Billy Gallacher was interviewed about being an Elvis fan with a group singing Elvis music – not an impersonator! Peter Nowland talked about his amazing Elvis collection. I was phoned in Memphis on the 16th (2am there, 8am here) and asked about the candlelight vigil and other activities there. And Barbara got on her soapbox about people who dress up as Elvis!
Helen Barrie was interviewed and photographed for an article in My Weekly magazine.
Maria Barrie was interviewed and appeared, with Helen, in the Daily Mirror.
Helen and Maria and a couple of others from Banbury were invited to be in the audience of a Vernon Kay Elvis show on the BBC, which is due to be broadcast later this month.
The Oxford Mail rang me in Memphis and I spoke to them from the swimming pool of the Heartbreak Hotel! They also spoke to Helen and Maria, and back here to Barbara and Billy and a 2-page article appeared, which included details of our fundraising.
The Banbury sister paper of the Oxford Mail interviewed Eva Bortkiewicz and an article was printed.
In Memphis the Daily Mirror spoke to John and Marie McDermott, Sue and Roy Fairlie, Ken and myself, and a photo appeared of John and Marie.
Apart from all this, Barbara spent the week fending off several TV stations who wanted us to take part in some rather iffy shows, generally requiring dressing up, which she ‘politely’ declined.
NOT BAD FOR A SMALL BRANCH!!!

Helen and Maria Barrie represented our Branch in the official Guard of Honour, which lines the driveway of Graceland from the gates to the Meditation Gardens for the candlelight vigil. It was still 90 degrees at 2am and although it is done in 20 minute shifts I was amazed when they told me they had stayed until 5.45am. People were still going up until around 7am. I’m told over 70,000 took part. More still held vigil on the roadway in front of Graceland. A policeman I spoke to said it was the biggest crowd he’d ever seen and far more than they had anticipated.
We all say a big thank you to Helen and Maria for representing and being there for us all.

I attended the Fan Club Presidents’ event and we were given some insight into the plans for the redevelopment of the Visitor Center, car park area and Heartbreak Hotel sites. This met with very mixed reaction, but the majority of us felt that it would be spoilt and never be the same again, but we had to accept that it was to become a money making venture. The news is that Graceland is now a designated national monument so can never be altered.

In Memphis Geraldine Melia took part in the 5K run and, despite the heat and lack of preparation, she finished in 40 minutes having run with the Navy Seals! She has the medal and T-shirt and is really proud to have completed it.

Visiting Memphis.

If you want a really reliable fun trip while there, call JJ on (901) 4284854 “Last Minute Transportation”. John is a fountain of knowledge on Elvis, Memphis and Tupelo. Several of us have had a great time driving with him.

Also Faye Savage on (901) 857-3436. “Royal Transportation”. Again, Faye is a lovely lady, reliable and will get you where you want to be in comfort and safety.

Please mention us if you book either of these.

-------------------------------------------------------

OUR VERY GOOD FRIEND DAVE BARNSDALE HAS GENEROUSLY DONATED HIS ENTIRE VINYL RECORD COLLECTION TO US TO RAISE MONEY FOR DOUGLAS HOUSE RESPICE. PLEASE CONTACT US FOR DETAILS AND HELP US RAISE MONEY FOR THIS VERY WORTHY CAUSE

Douglas House Respice

Douglas house is a new respite / hospice (a respice) recently opened in Oxford. It is the first respice in the country for young people over 16 years of age who have a life threatening illness. It provides 7 ensuite bedrooms and accommodation for those who may come to stay with the young people, as well as provision for day care, outreach work, terminal care and bereavement support. It has the capacity to support up to 200 families at any one time.
Douglas House is a new model of care for young people with a life-limiting illness following on from Helen House (a hospice for children in the same grounds). It is specifically designed to offer young people significant differences from an ordinary adult or childrens hospice. No charge will be made for this service and it is available for young people from a large area. It has cost £3million to build and opened in summer 2003. It receives no government funding and will cost an estimated £1million a year to run.
We were privileged to be invited to their open day immediately prior to opening (please click on the links to see photos of the open day). It really is a wonderful place with every last detail thought of. It is, however, obviously going to need large sums of money to continue to operate this excellent standard of care. We intend to continue to support them as much as possible. For more information visit www.helenanddouglas.org.uk

Our branch member and friend, Helen Barrie, who is very well known by Elvis fans everywhere, spends a lot of her time writing poetry. She has had several published and, if not in Memphis herself for the anniversary, someone will put a teddy and one of her poems on Elvis' grave. She asked if we would put this on our website and we are happy to oblige.

Elvis: His Life
As Seen Through The Eyes Of A Fan

A young boy from Tupelo
went to the Mississippi fairground show
and sang ‘Old Shep’.
The world did not yet know
that there was an explosion about to blow
in the form of a man named Elvis.
When he sang he shook his pelvis
the young went wild
I was then just a child.
The older generation did not understand
how this man
could affect us with his music and presence.
When he went in the army
we thought we’d go barmy
without his voice to hear
it was the worst of our fear.
His mother died and he did cry
he’d lost his friend
and thought that was the end.
But the fans’ love for him made him carry on.
He wowed them in Hollywood,
the films were mostly full of fun,
just what we needed when we were young.
Cinemas were packed out then, each film made a mint
because he was so energetic and different.
Never before had anyone made such an impact on the screen,
with such wild ways, charm and good looks
he certainly got us all hooked.
In ’67 Elvis married his girl Priscilla,
he met her in Germany while in the army.
We were happy for him as she wore his ring,
a handsome couple they did make
as their vows they did take.
In ’68 a baby was born called Lisa Marie,
Elvis was as happy as could be.
Also, in December was a show to remember
for the ’68 Special he dressed in black
Elvis was indeed back!
How the women did scream, Elvis in black leather
Wow!, what a scene
he certainly was a dream machine
1970 saw the M.G.M. rehearsals for the documentary
‘That’s The Way It Is’ being filmed.
There were lots of songs and laughter and the fans chatter.
When he sang ‘The Next Step Is Love’, ‘Sweet Caroline’
‘Suspicious Minds’ and ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’
he sent my pulses reeling
‘Tiger Man’ king of the jungle he certainly was on stage,
He captivated the audience, men, women and children
no matter what their age.
With colourful shirts, and gorgeous white suits
how handsome he did look.
1972 ‘Elvis On Tour’ was filmed
it showed the very best of him.
As he got older his voice was more deeper and powerful
with songs like a ‘Bridge over Troubled Water’
and ‘How Great Thou Art’
Made his performance from other singers worlds apart.
In 1973 he set the world alight
and did a memorable concert, the first by satellite.
Hawaii was the place, it was his favourite state
he gave me ‘Fever’ when he sang ‘Big Hunk of Love’
and ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love with You’
How that song is very true.
During the 70’s concerts and Vegas years
there was much laughter and some tears.
His singing and moves made all the women
fall frantically in love with him.
His presence on stage
will never disappear with age.
A divorce was soon on the way
and he sang ‘Separate Ways’.
For a while he was very sad
thinking about ‘For The Good Times’ he’d had.
Elvis was a very kind man, the gifts he gave away
with no thought of being repaid
is known the world over.
The charities he helped in his hometown of Memphis
is still being carried on today
by an army of devoted fans.
The cars and houses given to friends and strangers
put a smile on his face
he gave people hope where there was sadness and poverty.
His was definitely a ‘Rags To Riches’ story
in all its glory.
He entered my heart and touched my soul
he was the King of Rock and Roll.
Dead at 42 years
that news was the worst of our fears
how we did shed those tears.
All over the world the fans did pray
as the good Lord took him away.
Now 20 years has past,
How time goes so fast!
But never a day goes by without thinking of him.
He’ll be ‘Always on My Mind’ till the end of time.
