Perhaps the low turnout in local government elections is partly due to the fact the voter has long recognized is that local democracy plays so little part in our daily lives?

Creating a Nation of Tele TUBBIES
Talking about being forced to do something healthy, in the fresh air, I have been helping a local rugby coach, coaching some young teenagers about rugby, but what has shocked me is how obese and unhealthy many of them are. Certainly, lots of youngsters participating ‘have trouble running 200 meters without stopping’ and the prevalent attitude amongst many of them ‘is the belief that sports kit is just for show i.e. a fashion item and not for actual use’ (see Creating a Nation of Tele TUBBIES , published in ‘Rugby Times’ 27 March 03)

Is regular exercise a class issue?
Since those who are most likely to participate in regular vigorous exercise tend to be young white males, who were already active at school and continue with this pastime. Unfortunately, this cultural antipathy somehow grinds down even the most enthusiastic as such participation tends to decline with age. The Department Of Culture, Media and Sport reports that members of the managerial classes are statistically three times more likely to take regular exercise than those in other occupational groupings, with women and minorities statistically even less likely to participate than men in the same occupations. The more active you were as a youngster, the more likely you are to continue to participate throughout your life. This problem as described, illustrates failure by society and the British culture to maintain and encourage participation in some form of sustained regular workout for everyone in the community, whether it is rugby training or regular fast walks in the park.
Olympic bid, a public waste of money?
What’s costing the UK economy some £2 billion and 54,000 premature deaths a year? The cause, according to the Cabinet Office Strategy Unit (COSU) is Briton’s failure to take regular exercise. Yet Ken Livingstone and his backers the Olympic Stakeholders Group (OSG) want taxpayers to subsidies their dream, with some £ 2 billion plus of your money on this Olympic festival of bread and circuses. They see having the Olympics in London as some sort of Viagran solution to not only London’s, but also the nation’s problems. Unfortunately for them the evidence does not simply add up. to read on click here
Not more rugby facilities!
Ned Kelly writes in the Oxford Mail (5 May 03 Letters) that Oxford has already excellent facilities for rugby and cricket. It does not need yet another facility. This proposed scheme is simply the result of two rugby clubs from failing to share existing facilities and failure to win an earlier lottery bid. Ned suggests with the help of a small Sport England investment grant to upgrade existing resources, Oxford could have a centre of benefit to all residents, without ruining the quality of life of residents in Headington and Oxford. Oxford already has adequate rugby facilities! For local planning & sport news After all Oxford University has offered USE OF its facilities to locals through its 'SPORTS OUTREACH SCHEME'

BURY KNOWLE PARK NEWS
Despite the changeable conditions, many people braved the weather to dance to folk music and listen to brass band music. It was a great opportunity for Oxford’s Mayor and other local council members to meet the people. One child said ‘I hope we have a summer fete like this every year’. For Gill Cummings, the local business association organizer, the fete’s was worth all the hard work.
