Learn Chess With Us
Come along to Club Night on any Monday between September and April, and there will almost certainly be someone available who can introduce you to our fascinating game.
|
Play Friendly Chess With Us
All the chess we play is in a good friendly spirit. However, if you prefer to play without clocks, or without league positions, rating points or egos being at stake, come to a Club Night, and almost certainly there will be someone available to play a game or two with you.
|
Play Mad Chess With Us
Members of Oxford City Chess Club, and of other clubs in the area, meet in a pub on Friday nights to play five-minute chess. These are often fast, furious and highly entertaining games! The group currently meets at the 'Donnington Arms' at the junction of Howard Street and Silver Road in East Oxford from around 8:30 pm.

Play Local League Chess With Us
Oxford City currently runs five teams in the Oxford and District Chess League catering for all ages and all levels of ability. Matches take place on weekday evenings, with home matches on Mondays at St. Margaret's Institute, starting at 7:30, and away matches taking place on various days at times and places decided by the host clubs. Travel as far away as Banbury, Wantage, Aylesbury or Witney may be needed for away matches. Match games are played with clocks and last around 3 hours.
|
Play National League Chess With Us
Oxford City does not run a team in the Four Nations Chess League, but several of its players play for teams in the League, including some of us playing for the Oxford teams run as a joint venture for University and Town players. If you want to play national league chess, we can make the necessary contacts for you, or look in the "Who's Who" section of the site. National League chess is normally played on weekends and Bank Holidays in the Midlands.
|
Play Tournament Chess With Us
The Oxford City Club organises a Quickplay Tournament each year, usually early in October. Its members participate in the annual Tournaments held at Exeter Hall, Kidlington, every February, and at Lincoln College, Oxford University, every May. Members also regularly take part in other tournaments up and down the country and abroad, so if you are looking to share travel costs or even just to see a few friendly faces at the tournaments you go to, Oxford City Club is the place to come to.
|
Play Junior Chess With Us
In a joint venture with Abingdon School, Oxford City Club is now involved with junior chess for the first time in many years, and one of our teams in the local league consists entirely of junior players. If you or your child is looking for somewhere to learn and play chess, come along on a Monday club night or get in touch via the "Who's Who" page. (Oxford City has a child protection policy and has CRB-checked coaches and team managers.) |
