Welcome to the Hospital Chaplaincy in Oxfordshire

The hospitals cover a large area around Oxford and well beyond. The chaplain can be a very useful first point of contact, if you are coming into hospital or have a loved one who might benefit from a visit from the chaplain.
For the John Radcliffe Hospital (including the Chrildren's Hospital, the Churchill and the West Wing) call the Switchboard (01865) 741166 and ask the operator to 'Please will you radio page the Roman Catholic Chaplain and ask him to call me on my phone number.' There is a chaplain on call 24 hours to help and advise.
The direct line number to the RC Chaplain is 01865 220191. Alternatively the Chaplaincy Office phone number is 01865 221732.
You can find further general information from the Hospital web-site (click below).

Coming into hospital? What to do before you come in.

It is good practice for those who know they are coming into hospital to receive the Sacrament of the Sick in their parish before admission to a hospital. This is particularly so for those going in for day surgery. Talk to your parish priest.

When you come into hospital...

...you should be asked about your faith or religion. Make an explicit request, on admission, that you are not only registered as a Catholic patient, but that you want the RC Chaplain to be informed and that you would like to see the chaplain. You may also be visited by the many Catholic volunteers who support the chaplains in their work.

What happens when you are in hospital?

The chaplain would normally be informed of the fact that you are in hospital and so would endeavour to make contact with you as soon as possible, usually within a few days. Volunteers do visit and report back to the chaplain. Every effort is made to make contact with RC patients before the weekend so that Holy Communion can be brought to your bed side.

If you miss Holy Communion on Sunday for any reason and / or wish you to receive during the week, then do not hesitate to contact the RC chaplain.

In urgent need of meeting with the chaplain?

If you feel that you or the relative that you are visiting needs to urgently receive the support of the RC Chaplain then either ask the nurse to 'Please call the switchboard and ask them to radio page the RC Chaplain.' The chaplain is available 24 hours and will respond immediately by phoning the ward or telephone number given and either speak with the nurse or to the person who has made the request.

RC Volunteers working in our hospitals...

...are very much appreciated both by patients and also by the chaplains. They visit the wards and make contact with patients by stopping to say a prayer or just have a chat. The volunteers also act as a point of contact between the patient and the chaplain, usually to alert the chaplain that a patient has requested a visit. RC Volunteers are always Extra Ordinary Ministers of the Eucharist and so will often bring the Blessed Sacrament to those who want to receive Holy Communion.
