Welcome to Campion Hall

Our Permanent Private Hall is situated in Brewer Street, Oxford. OX1 1QS
Tel: (01865) 286100 Fax: (01865) 286148
Campion Hall is named after Saint Edmund Campion, the Jesuit martyr who himself had been a distiguished scholar at St. John's College, Oxford at the time of Elizabeth.

(Much of the information about this site has been taken from an article by Sr Joy Elder SW in the publication Catholic Life, dated August 2002.)

The Master of Campion Hall is Dr Peter L'Estrange SJ

(Former Rector Newman College , Melbourne and Honorary Fellow Mannix College)University.,Others resident at Campion Hall are Revv Ian Brayley, M.A., Vincent Bywater, M.A., Rodger Charles, M.A., D.Phil., Philip Endean M.A., D.Phil., Clarence Gallagher, M.A., J.C.D., William Hewett, M.A., Richard Randolph M.A.,Nicholas King, M.A. (All S.J.).
As well as being the religious superior of the Jesuit community, the Master has to ensure the intellectual well being of the students, and the conformity of the Hall to the statutes of the University. But it is the students for whom the Hall primarily exists.

Campion Hall is the Jesuit academic community of Oxford.

The residents are mostly Jesuits, though there are members of other religious orders and congregations, as well as some laymen. They are a very international body, coming as they do from more than a dozen different countries.

Chapel at Campion Hall

The chapel is a kind of miniature version of continental Jesuit Baroque, and contains a wonderful set of Stations of the Cross by Frank Brangwyn, copies of a set designed for a war memorial in Flanders.

Station of the Cross

A tapestry, full of images from the poetry and note books of the Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, hangs behind the high altar.

Statue of Madona & Child

Campion Hall has been the recipient of a very large number of gifts of works of art from benefactors ever since its foundation, and they give a very special atmosphere to the house.

Historic Wood Carving in Foyer

Campion Hall is, by Oxford standards, a comparitively modest building, opened in 1935 and designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, famous for the imperial buildings in New delhi, the Cenotaph in Whitehall, and several notable country houses.

Close up of Altar in Chapel

The tapestry that hangs behind the altar was commissioned by an anonymous benefactress and designed by a South African nun, Sister Gereon, who runs a textile workshop in Durban.

English Martyrs' Altar:from Chelsea to the Heavenly Jerusale

The picture on the altar dedicated to the English Martyrs is a combination of Thomas More's house in Chelsea and the Heavenly Jerusalem...
