History

South West Oxfordshire Mencap or SWOM for short has been in existence for over 30 years and covers the same area as the Vale of White Horse District Council. It was the North Berkshire Mencap until 1974 when this area (Abingdon, Wantage and Faringdon) became part of Oxfordshire.

We are part of Oxfordshire District Mencap and are affiliated to National Mencap.

Our Committee includes professional workers in their personal capacity, parents and people with learning disabilities and meets about quarterly with an AGM in May.

In2000 we ghave donated money to a school minibus appeal, Buddies II (a local weekly children's club and have underwritten two residential holiday weeks.

We need funds particularly for the holiday weeks and our Committee is anxious to recruit members who are carers for children. We act as advocates and a pressure group on statutory services and are anxious to have any issues of concern referred to us.

We have a nominal annual subscription which includes national affiliation.
