There is nothing like a Dame

This year we started preparations with a talk, or perhaps masterclass, from Richard Westcott on his experiences as a professional Dame. First stage is to put on the make-up, subtlety is not required.

Posh frocks

Most dames keep their own wardrobes, here Richard models one dress and shows us another ... made from duvet covers!

Role reversal

Usually we're the people getting an audience on their feet singing, this time we were following Richard's lead.

November 6th - the work begins

The ladies of the chorus look doubtful as Andrea explains a new dance routine that's full of Eastern promise.

Nov 13th

Andrea begins to show the teen chorus how to be cats.

Nov 13th again

Amanda, Andrea and the teens in the Meeeeow song.

Nov 20th

The servants are put through their drill by Sergeant Andrea.

Nov 20th again

Four maids a'dusting but where are the three scrubbers scrubbing?

Nov 24th

In conditions which would have provided Selim the Grim with snow (and sleet and hail and rain and ...) to sell to Eskimos we gave away 250 baloons and 300 flyers to the crowds at the switching-on of Bicester lights.

Nov 27th

Four gentlemen of the chorus receive instruction from Andrea in the use of a familiar household object.

Nov 27 again

And what would you call ladies who scrub ??

Dec 4th

As we start working with the scripts the bad guys get involved; Martin and Rod receive instruction in wickedness from Mark.

Dec 4th again

The chorus get to the end of the servants' song and present a tableau.

Dec 11th scenery

Down in the barn something stirred ... yes it's Sandra getting underway on the major task of painting scenery.

Dec 11th costume

The ladies of the chorus in their costumes for the opening scenes.

Dec 11th costume again

Full of Eastern Promise ? the ladies of the chorus all ready for retail therapy in the market of Pashturk.

Dec 11th evening

After all the excitement of the day it was back to rehearsals and a first run through of the messy scene.

Dec 18th

I think you can make up your own caption to this one.

Dec 18th again

Choreography here by the famed Russian dancer Yaputya Lefleggin.

Jan 2nd

Can we remember what we did last year, oh yes we bow down to the Lord Chamberlain.

Jan 2nd again

Charlie, Angela, Scott, Maureen, Martin and Celia looking every bit the model servants they are portraying.

Jan 7th

Down in the barn Gordon starts individually hand painting roof tiles.

Jan 7th again

Andrea and Amanda pose for a publicity still in fron of the incomplete set .... they would have died of hypothermia outside in the sleet.

Jan 8th

Why is Gordon asleep under the table with a cuddly toy ?

Jan 8th again

This looks more like an audition for A Chorus Line. Andrea, Amanda, Rod and Martyn join the teens for a high stepping routine.

Jan 15

Who are these unfortunates and are they rehearsing or preparing for a robbery?

Jan 15 again

Full of Eastern promise ??

Jan 15 Costume Party

In the Hare Leys sweat shop Celia and Lesley slave over hot sewing machines while ....

Jan 15 costume party again

Jackie, Christine and Gaye cut the fabrics.

Jan 22nd

Are Jono and Richard asleep or are they just playing dead?

Jan 22nd again

Andrea is shocked at what Andy has just told her. And on the left the busiest person at rehearsals, Hilary our prompt.

Jan 29 - childrens' chorus

Andrea shows the childrens' chorus how to skate on the village hall floor.

Jan 29 costume party

When shall we three meet again

with cloth, machine and skein.

Jan 29 costume party again

When the cutting out is done

and the battle's lost or won.

Jan 29th

If seven maids with seven mops

Rehearsed for half a year

Do you suppose " the Director said

That they could sing words clear

Jan 29 again

Suzanne, Mark, Nicky, Martin, Scott and Celia rehearse the audience song.

Feb 3rd balance

An external audit has shown that some members of the cast have not received fair representation on this site. This picture, taken some time ago, is intended to restore the balance.

Feb 3

A particularly scary collection of mice prepare to attack the Lord Chamberlain.

Feb 3 again

Florence shakes a leg while Charlie check his shoes

Feb 5 Costume and Photo call

The photographer from Bicester Ad/Oxford Times takes the chorus in front of the almost complete set.

Feb 5 costume call

Our Strictly Come Dancing team in full regalia.

Feb 5

Our four maids have been polishing since November but the hall floor looks much the same.

Feb 5 again

Amanda leads the cats, who lead everybody else in the audience song.

And finally ....

The photographer appears in the last of the rehearsal pix. Production and backstage shots will be on another page in a couple of weeks.
