Picture Page B:

Welcome to my second Picture Page. These photographs are about the subjects in my stories - enjoy them!

..

Popular BBC Radio Nottingham presenter Dennis McCarthy, who did much to promote the cinema on his daily programme 'Afternoon Special' He was much loved by listeners throughout the East Midlands.

..

Here's an old photograph I discovered in the basement of the Heanor 'Empire'. It was taken at 'The Victory Cinema' in Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, and shows the crowds who turned up for a personal appearance of Sandy Powell. In the late 1940s, and throughout the 1950s, stars frequently did personal appearances at local cinemas and theatres.

..

This is me again, in a publicity shot for a local newspaper. The photographers always took us in unusual poses; like the one taken by the 'Derby Evening Telegraph' where I was standing on the front entrance steps. The 'Read-o-Graph' sign above me showing the title of the nights film which was 'Beneath the Planet of the Apes'!

..

After the 'Star Goup' had twinned the Ripley 'Hippodrome' Cinema, a new Projection Box was built on a steel gantry on the rear of the building. This is Jack Rudkin, who then worked for the National Coal Board, who worked part time as Relief Projectionist. It was taken one evening before I was calling 'Bingo' in the lower part of the building.

..

This is Susan and Dion Hanson, Dion was a partner in 'Cinemex', the company formed with John and Frank Dainty, who leased several of the cinemas around Heanor. He was at this time a Sound Engineer with the 'Westrex Corporation'.

..

The front of house (F.O.H.) of the Heanor 'Empire' Cinema. The semi-circle canopy, popular with most Midland Empire Theatres was removed. The cinema, here renamed 'Studio 1' was at this time in the ownership of 'The Star Group of Companies', who repainted the front, and did much alteration to the foyer, and circle seating.
