1/4/07 Burton Flemming
A good race was had by 5 members of Malton Wheelers on Sunday. The 31 Mile race was organised by Bridlington Cycling Club and what a good job they did too.
A chilly, windy but sunny day greeted Paul, Chris, Matthew, Colin and Hamish at 10:30 on Sunday, unfortunately, Johann (Hamish's brother) couldn't race as he is not yet old enough.
From the outset, two brothers from York Cycleworks sprinted away from the group, Chris tried to bridge the gap for a lap and a half with the rest of our club members trying to help. The two Batchalor brothers eventually won all primes and the race overall.
Paul finished 9th with Chris a very respectable 12th and Matthew 13th within the main peleton. Hamish and Colin also finished well within the field of 50 odd riders.

15/4/07 Middleton Road Race
It was a very hot day for mid April at Middleton on the Wolds for the Dave McKay Memorial Road Race. Paulo was racing with a stinking cold, Colin rode into Malton for a lift and Matthew was racing with saddle sore, so we already has excuses before we started racing. The pace was fast from the start and unfortunately left Colin on the first prime. Paulo continued with the field for a few more miles but found it very difficult to breath. The course was covered with fint, Matthew saw at least 6 people retire due to punctures. Matthew managed to finish the race within the main field, just missing a point on the licence. Colin and Paulo finished the race and did not drop out, continuing the Malton Wheelers policy of racing to finish, not to drop out. |
22/4/07 Hambleton Road Race
5 mile Time Trial Cancelled - 25 April 2007
Raining and chilly, Matthew, Colin, Paul and Chris were ready for another lashing by the 2nd and 3rd catagory riders. The pace was fast even in the neutralised part through Northallerton. Chris 'had a go' with a few breakaways only to be gobbled up by the bunch. On the final ascent to the finish, "snake in the grass" Paul moved through the field to finish along with Chris well up the bunch while Matthew brought up the rear. Colin spent the race screwing his head back on - you know what I mean Colin. This was a great course, our average speed was 24mph which would of been faster if it was dry. |
29/4/07 - Wetwang
With one man down (Matthew due to illness) Chris, Colin and Paul signed on at Wetwang Village Hall at a respectible time of 11:00AM. Hamish tried to 'sign up' on the day but the field was full. This is always a popular race, why? it is so difficult! I guess this is what makes us racing cyclists - testing ourselves, pushing to the limits of our bodies capabilities, to say that you have "done Wetwang".
It was a fast start again even in the neutralised part with alot of pushing and elbows nudging. Each hill and the considerable pace took its toll on all of our riders and of our three members, Chis (pictured) D.N.F. which was a surprise, Colin and Paul finished clinging on to the back of the bunch.
Lets put this down to experience and try again next year...... |
9/5/07
Prelude to the Ryedale Rumble A great ride was had by the cyclists hard enough to tackle our prelude to the Ryedale Rumble on Sunday 6 May. With 115miles ahead of us we headed into the hills and "mountains" of Cockayne, Church Houses, Lealholm, Egton Bridge and across the tops to Stape. The terrain got the better of us and we had to miss out Rosedale Chimney. With a mug of tea and a slice of cake at Hutton le Hole we headed off back home after 6 hours in the saddle and 100miles on our tyres.
Malton Wheelers Road Club evening 10-mile time trial-2 May 2007
After a late start to the season Malton Wheelers were back in business on Wednesday with the first of their evening time trials. Fifteen riders faced the timekeeper for 10 chilly miles in a rising North Easterly wind. Malton were unable to take top honours as Scarborough Paragon’s Brian Stephenson took first place in 23 minutes 16 seconds beating Malton’s Ged Kerins (23:17) by a single second.
Malton Wheelers are enjoying a recent surge in membership, fielding 11 riders on the night and showing strength in depth at the front end of the field. Times by Malton riders included Paul Hickman (23:58, 4th) and old rivals Matthew Enticknap and Colin Baldwin recording 24:16 and 24:50 for 6th and 7th respectively. Nick Caddy was first rider home not using tri-bars in 25:19, while newcomer Doug Taylor-Helps (28:07) was a surprise 9th beating stalwarts Andy Lowe (28:42) and Adrian Wardell (29:06) who are still working off the cobwebs from their traditional ‘gentle’ winter training. Finally, neophytes M Wilson (30:35) and Ian Farrar (31:09) brought up the lanterne rouge but given their inexperience and the difficult conditions they’ll surely improve through the season.
Plan B Racing Spring 2-Day presented by Big Ring Cycles-5 & 6 May 2007 Paul Hickman was the only Malton Wheeler taking part in the "Plan B Racing Spring 2-Day presented by Big Ring Cycles" at Ashbourne. This was a 2 day, 3 stage race where there was a yellow and King of the Mountain jersey available for the leaders. The First stage was the 2K Prologue Time Trial where Paul was placed in the middle of the field. The second stage was after the Prologue and consisted of a 60K, 30 lap circuit race where Paul stayed with the main bunch. The last stage on Sunday was "a 60mile killer" with the last lap finishing off with a stinker of a hill. Paul finished the last stage within the third bunch. This was a very well organised event See link for results. |

Steve Rigby Mem RR 13/5/07
A 63 mile Criterium over 15 laps. This was a rather fast race with only one hill to speak of, but half way through, the small hill started to feel like a mountain. The bunch was not very smooth at all and Matthew and Colin was spat out of the back of the bunch. Chris and Paul stayed with the bunch with Paul leading the main bunch on the last lap in an attemp to catch the lead groups. Both Paul and Chris had a respecable finish. East Riding Road League 1
On Thursday 10 May, Paul Hickman and Matthew Enticknap took part in the first of a seven part pursuit league held over 30 miles at Little Weighton near Beverley. With the fourth category riders being despatched from the start line before the other categories, they managed to stay away for the entire race with the result of a fourth category win. Paul finished a fantastic third with Matthew finishing seventh. A thoroughly enjoyable race. Matthew & Paul now have points on our licence - 2 & 7.
Boroughbridge Road League On Tuesday 8 May, Chris Goodway and his son Charles entered a race none of the club knew about. (Were they keeping it a secret?). As with all pursuit races, each riding catagory start at different timed intervals with the ultimate aim of a gathering of cyclists at the finish line. On the second lap, the third catagory riders cought the 4th cats including Chris and Charles. As this happened, the duo sprinted off with a few riders joining them. On the last lap they decided to "have a go" and managed to shake off the other riders crossing the line in a fantastic first and second place. Charles was over the moon as this was his first road race!
Malton Wheelers Road Club evening 5-mile time trial 9 May 2007
Following last week’s Sun-blessed full field Wednesday’s 5-mile evening time trial was reduced to a hardy core of competitors by the rain and cold. Despite the weather the racing was none the less gripping. It’s become a tradition under such harsh conditions for Paul Hickman to step on to the top spot but he was denied this honour by a fine ride from Matthew Enticknap. Just three seconds separated the pair after five miles of eyeballs-out effort with Enticknap recording 11 minutes 25 seconds; a massive forty seconds improvement on his previous personal best for the course.
Mike Potter (Scarborough Paragon) spoilt the Malton clean sweep by taking third place with 12 minutes dead. Malton’s Colin Baldwin was fourth in 12:29. Baldwin, like Enticknap and Hickman, flies the flag for Malton in road races across the region at weekends but is yet to transfer the training benefits into his time trialling. Nevertheless the general improvement across the Wheelers’ top riders is sure to make for a season of close and exciting racing. At the other end of the field mention must be made of Ian Farrar. In only his second competitive outing in a Malton jersey he managed a solid 14:33, upping his average speed from last week by nearly 1.5 mph - definitely one to watch! |
26 May 2007
24 May 2007 Hull Thursday Pursuit No. 2. Colin, Paul and Matthew were in the second bunch this week as we were singled out as being too fast for the first group. A very unorganised start from the bunch headed off up to the top of the hill. We all eventually settled into some sort of through and off rythem with 8 or so riders doing all the work. As we headed into the long rise of the first lap with the group shouting out "Car!", "Out!", "Gravel!" to aid riders behind, Matthew shouted out "Fire!". A car had burst into flames on the side of the road and was burning quite furiously. All occupants were safe, but the race had to be stopped unfortunately. 20 May 2007 Hull Thursday Road Race. Paul finished well within the group, with Colin finishing 39th. Matthew Punctured 6miles into the race after a very badly gravelled road. 20 May 2007 25mile Time Trial. A Fantastic ride for Christopher Goodway and son Charles. Chris - 55:27 finishing in 8th place out of 95 riders Charles - 58:30, 36th place. Malton Wheelers Road Club evening 10-mile time trial 16 May 2007 Despite another cold wet evening Wednesday night's cycle racing was as hot as ever. Stung by the previous week’s defeat to clubmate Matthew Enticknap, Paul Hickman was clearly out for revenge; and he managed it by only the smallest of margins. Hickman covered the 10-mile out-and-back course in 23 minutes 38 seconds with Enticknap just missing out in 23:39, despite recording a personal best. Next rider in was Scarborough’s Barry Cappleman but he was nearly a minute adrift (24:37) and never likely to challenge the Malton men. Visiting rider Lloyd Billingham (Perth CC, 24:48) headed up the rest of the field narrowly beating Malton’s Colin Baldwin (25:01). Baldwin has switched to a time trial-specific machine this season but is struggling to find the sparkling from he had last year when he was regularly putting a minute into long-time friend and rival Enticknap.
The tail end of the field also provided some close racing with Ian Farrer (29:29) breaking the 20 mph watershed to beat fellow newcomer M Wilson by 40 seconds. Farrer has competed in all the evening events so far this season and the extra racing miles he has gained over Wilson are beginning to show. In the first race of the season it was Wilson who triumphed by 36 seconds but cycling is a sport that rewards hard work and Farrer’s improvement is testament to this.
The next Malton Wheelers promotion is a 5-mile time trial which should see the return of father and son duo Chris and Charles Goodway. The Goodways recently scored a Malton one-two in a local road race and if they can be tempted out by some fine evening weather, there’s the prospect of a real battle for the top four places next Wednesday.

2 June 2007
5 June 2007 Boroughbridge TLI Malton Wheelers’ Chris Goodway and Son Charles, put in another appearance at Boroughbridge on Tuesday. As they are now "marked" men, they were put into the second group. Working together, they cought the first group with ease. Chris finished 3rd with Charles sprinting for 6th place. What Riders! Malton Wheelers 10-mile time trial Wednesday 30 May 2007
Malton Wheelers’ Chris Goodway produced a storming ride to take second place in last Wednesday’s evening time trial. Goodway covered the 10 miles in 22 minutes 27 seconds but was just pipped for top spot by Scarborough’s Brian Stephenson (22:22). Although in his fifties Goodway is riding faster now than he did in his twenties recently recording 55 minutes in an open 25-mile event and taking a fine second place to his son Charles in a local road race.
No less than eighteen riders faced the timekeeper in the increasingly popular mid-week time trial series promoted by Malton Wheelers. In third place behind Stephenson and Goodway was Scarborough’s evergreen veteran Mike Potter followed by Malton’s equally stalwart Paul Hickman who was having, for him, something of an off night managing only 23:22. Next rider home for the Wheelers was Colin Baldwin, sixth with 24:24. After a hard winter’s training and a lot of early-season racing Baldwin has suffered a dip in form but his times are now moving back in the right direction.
With the bigger fields this year compared to recent years it’s harder to win, but races within races are developing this season. The tussle between Mike Wilson and Ian Farrer is really hotting up with Farrer just taking the honours again this week by a mere nine seconds; recording 28:17 to Wilson’s 28:26. Special mention must also be made of Doug Taylor-Helps who, riding a tiny fixed gear, “twiddled” to an excellent 26:58 for twelfth and lanterne rouge Kerry Billingham (18th with 29:10) proving that racing can be enjoyed whether you win or not.
Pictured is Malton Wheelers’ Andy Lowe as he gets the pre-race countdown from timekeeper Joan Bourne and pusher-off Jamie Strangeway before producing a 26-minute ride for eleventh place.
27 May 2007 Richmond Road Race Colin, Paul and Matthew managed to race the full 35 miles without getting wet with the promise of rain and the skies full. A fast start, again the race was a rather complicated route but one that held our interests high. All three of us were dropped of the back of the bunch on the first lap. As we were further split up we managed to retain the sight of the group infront but not managing to catch them up. The finish was very tight, a full 360 degree around a roundabout, ending with a stadium finish. Matthew beat Paul with Colin finishing very happily, not far behind on his new wheels.

Malton Wheelers 6-mile “Leavening Scramble” Wednesday 6 June 2007
Roadmen versus Testers was the order of the day for Malton Wheelers six-mile Leavening Scramble on Wednesday evening. Time trial specialist Ged Kerins took the honours in 13 minutes 44 seconds with Matthew Enticknap (14:05) just edging fellow roadman Paul Hickman (14:15) into third place. The straight-out course from Welham Road, Norton to the crossroads in Leavening is a race with something for everyone. Kerins, who’s best climbing days are well behind him, made the most of the early flat section taking thirty seconds out of his main rivals before the climb past the quarry, after that it was a case of hanging on as the others clawed back time. Hickman used his fearless descending ability, pushing close to 50 mph on the wind-assisted descent from the quarry, before grinding a huge gear up the rises to the finish. Enticknap demonstrated the supplesse of a true climber; twiddling a low gear and dancing effortlessly up the climbs. But in the end the finish came just too soon for Enticknap and Hickman, and Kerins held on for the win.
Nick Caddy lead the rest of the pack home in 14 minutes 48 seconds to claim fastest ride on a conventional road bike and just beat Colin Baldwin (15:02). Baldwin was also experimenting with racing a conventional bike as the extreme position necessary to ride a time-trial specific machine has been affecting his performance. Other rides of note included: Paul Ramsay who had never ridden the course before but managed a very creditable seventh with 16:22, Doug Taylor-Helps (ninth with 16:41) who sensibly didn’t ride his fixed-wheel machine but, somewhat less sensibly, swapped it for a geared bike weighing at least twice as much; and the ever-present Ian Farrar (tenth in 17:27) who is having a very consistent first year of racing. Ride of the night must, however, go to Gareth Taylor who rode an hour each way from Low Mill to enter the race and still managed sixth place despite shipping his chain and having to stop to re-engage it.
Notable Wheelers absentee on the night was Chris Goodway who was recuperating from his efforts the previous evening where he had claimed third place in a bunch sprint at a road race near Boroughbridge. Chris’s son Charles also managed an excellent sixth place in the same race – demonstrating again the strength in depth of the Malton club this season.

3 July 2007
Press Cuttings: Malton Wheelers 10-mile time trial Wednesday 20 June 2007 With five of the promoting club’s top riders away on road race duty it was left to Ged Kerins to take on the Scarborough visitors on Wednesday for round eight of the Malton Wheelers’ evening time trial series. Brian Stephenson led the charge for Scarborough Paragon with 22 minutes 49 seconds but was denied the win by Kerins who completed the course in 22:42. Last time the two met Stephenson had won by a single second and had gone on a fortnight later to dish out a five-second beating to Malton’s Chris Goodway, so it was a good result for the Wheelers.
A strong headwind on the slightly longer outward leg meant that riders were taking over 13 minutes to get the turn and many riders had little left for what should have been an easy return leg. Scarborough’s Barry Cappleman was third home in 24:56, and over two minutes adrift of the fastest riders. Next rider in for Malton was Steve Suddaby in 27:54 which was good enough for sixth overall closely followed by Kerry Billingham in seventh (28:14). The season-long battle between Mike Wilson and Ian Farrar tipped Wilson’s way this week with Wilson just taking the honours for eighth in 29:14 to Farrar’s 29:19.
Otley Town Centre Races On the same evening Malton Wheelers’ roadmen were being cheered on by huge crowds at the annual Otley Town Centre Races. The 12-lap, 17-mile Senior Race was run off at a furious pace with Malton’s Charles Goodway making much of the early running, stretching out the peloton and showing off the Malton colours. The pace was so hot that by the finish Charles’ efforts had caused his team mates Colin Baldwin and Mathew Enticknap to be spat out of the back of the bunch, while Charles’ father, Chris, found the going so hard he failed to finish.
Despite repeated efforts Charles’ gamble didn’t pay off and he was unable to break away from the bunch. Inevitably he had little left to contest the final sprint and finished in the main pack with the fifth member of the Malton Wheelers team, Paul Hickman. The race was won by Damian Sharp (West Yorkshire Police CC) and although they didn’t come away with any medals the Malton team punched well above their weight and with one win already this season there’s surely more to come.
Ryedale Rumble 23 June 2007 What a route! For those who rode it, we must be lean, mean cycling machines. A quote from Save Beeley,
"Top day yesterday now I'm looking back at it and Rosedale Chimney conquered - result! The stats off my GPS were distance 115 miles, climbing 11,167 feet and for me a moving average of 14.6 mph, overall average of 13.6, riding time of 7.52 and a total time of 8.26 with stops. Looking forward to the next challenge."
Otley Town Centre Criterium 20 June 2007 What an Evening Malton Wheelers had on Wednesday evening. The heaving crowd that lined the route cheered us on throughout the whole race. 12 laps in the middle of Otley totalling (only) 17 miles was the order of the day but it was fast from the outset as expected. Half way through the race we were all still within the main bunch trying hard to keep up with the other riders. Charles Goodway kept riding off the front of the bunch stretching the peleton out in the process dropping Matthew Enticknap and Colin Baldwin out the back. The two "boys" rode within thier own little groups to finish the race. Paul Hickman and Charles finished within the main group but because of Charles early effort failed to make a stadium position. Chris, Charles Father failed to finish.
Malton Wheelers hilly 10.5-mile time trial Wednesday 13 June 2007
Another Wednesday evening race and another night of pouring rain and bone-chilling wind. But the harsh conditions didn’t stop Malton Wheelers’ Paul Hickman having a storming ride to beat the field by well over a minute. Starting as last rider Hickman, who seems to revel in bad weather, made the most of the relatively flat start from Amotherby to Slingsby. By the top of the hill on the Castle Howard road, above Slingsby, Hickman had already taken half a minute out of his closest rival, Matthew Enticknap, and over a minute out of the other riders. Interestingly at this point Ian Farrar was slightly down on Keith Buck but the relentless up and down on the route back through Coneysthorpe and on to Swinton Lane took its toll on Buck and he finally finished 40 seconds down on the improving Farrar.
The evening, though, belonged to Hickman who swept past Enticknap in the last few miles to finish first in Amotherby in 26 minutes and 52 seconds. Enticknap recorded 28:27 and Colin Baldwin, with a welcome return to form, completed the top three in 29:09. Newcomers Paul Ramsey and Kerry Billingham filled fourth and fifth places in 31:17 and 33:46 respectively. Both riders were tackling the race for the first time and were surprised by how much harder the hilly route proved compared to the usual flat ten-mile course.
Malton riders had a busy weekend too. On Saturday eight Malton Wheelers club members swapped racing for fund raising as they completed the Great Yorkshire Bike Ride in aid of a number of local charities including Disability Action Yorkshire, Ryedale MENCAP and Wetherby Lions amongst others. Not content with the 70 miles from Wetherby to Filey, Enticknap, Hickman, Nick Caddy, Andy Whalley and Dave Beeley then rode back to Malton to make it a round 100 miles. Even so this still wasn’t enough for some as Enticknap, Hickman and Baldwin joined father and son Chris and Charles Goodway to ride the City Road Club (Hull) 60-mile road race on Sunday. Charles Goodway was active at the front throughout the race but no one was prepared to work with him, probably because they didn’t relish the prospect of trying to beat him in a sprint from a small group, and his efforts came to nothing. Nonetheless, the Malton colours were highly visible at the centre of the action and all finished with the main bunch.

11 July 2007 Hilly 10mile Time Trial
Last Wednesday’s evening time trial promoted by the Malton Wheelers was the second and final visit of the season to the hilly 10.5-mile circuit around Amotherby, Slingsby and Coneysthorpe. Last time on this circuit Paul Hickman had thrashed the whole field by more than a minute. This time things were a little different, Hickman still triumphed in 26 minutes and 29 seconds but he was run very close by an in-form Matthew Enticknap who recorded 26:45. Hickman’s effort was a slight improvement over his previous time on this course when he had revelled in driving rain but Enticknap’s improvement of nearly two minutes was nothing short of amazing.
Scarborough Paragon’s Mike Potter completed the podium, although he was a further minute back with 27:48. Now the far side of 45, Potter is still whippet-thin but the ability to climb hills fast is the first of a cyclist’s “faculties” to go and he was never going to catch the top two. Fourth place was filled by Mark Hitchcock (28:06) making a successful return to racing in Malton colours after a few years out of the sport. Gareth Taylor (Whitby Endeavour) filled fifth spot in 28:32 and was probably the classiest climber in the field but time trialling is not his forte. Following his recent move from Whitby into Ryedale, Malton are hoping they might lure Taylor into strengthening their road squad next season. The minor placings were headed up by Nick Caddy returning from injury to record a creditable 28:54. One and a half minutes covered the next four riders home: Adrian Wardell (30:47), Kerry Billingham (31:31), Steve Suddaby (32:02) and Mike Wilson (32:17). Finally, Malton’s own “Gentleman of the Road”, Keith Buck, staved off the curse of the lanterne rouge by drafting in his brother, Chris, from Wales to fill last place. Keith and Chris finished in 35:13 and 36:24 respectively and enjoyed the event at least as much as the quicker men.
The Tour de France Prologue Time Trial in London.
What an event this was: From the "meet & greet" in Trafalgar Square to the train trip back home on Saturday night, the weekend was full of excitement and heat! A carnival atmosphere throughout the weekend was the result of up to 1 million people lining the streets of London to watch one of the most wonderful spectacles to behold the English crowds. This was a fantastic experience only to be repeated "en France". Please look on the Gallery for some photos, perhaps more will come of the riders? Come on Nick..... Should we organise a trip over the water next year???????
Please get your entries in to Scarborough Paragons Time Trial as soon as possible. Apply using the CTT form-this is an open TT not a club event. Entries close 17 July. Lets show Scarborough how its done........
Malton Wheelers 5-mile time trial Wednesday 27 June 2007
Chris Goodway recorded a personal best 11 minutes and 1 second to take first place in Malton Wheelers’ 5-mile time trial on Wednesday evening. Goodway, taking a break from road racing and making a rare appearance in a time trial, beat Malton clubmate Paul Hickman into second place by a mere 5 seconds. Third place went to Mike Potter from the Scarborough Paragon Cycling Club; but recording 11:24 he was 18 seconds slower than Hickman and far from troubling the leaders. Further down the field Colin Baldwin (11:48) finally got the better of Matthew Enticknapp (12:08), although the latter had to contend with a puncture so the true gap between the two is uncertain. In the season-long, nip-and-tuck tussle between Ian Farrar and Mike Wilson the elastic finally snapped with Farrar covering the five miles in 13:31 to beat Wilson (13:53) by 22 seconds - a massive gap over such a short distance.
Charity ride Cycling is about more than just racing and this will be amply illustrated by Malton Wheelers member Andy Lowe later this month. Andy will be taking on the 472-mile Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) organised by the Des Moines Register, and which starts on 22 July. He is riding the event in aid of Scarborough Baby Care Unit: “I’ve been intending to do something for the Unit since my baby girl needed care there and this seemed like something out of the ordinary and a real challenge” explained Andy. Andy will be financing the trip himself so all money raised will go directly to the Unit.

Our best wishes for a speedy recovery goes out to Paul Hickman who was recently knocked off his bike while training.
Malton Wheelers 5-mile time trial Wednesday 25 July 2007
With a burgeoning field, including Scarborough Paragon’s in-form Mark Grange, it was going to need a very good ride to take the honours in Malton Wheelers’ Wednesday evening time trial. Malton’s Paul Hickman and Ged Kerins rose to the challenge with Hickman just missing the Scarborough scalp by two seconds, recording 11 minutes and two seconds to Grange’s 11 minutes dead, while Kerins held for the win with 10:53.
The race had been scheduled for ten miles but was shortened due to traffic works. The longer event normally attracts a larger field than the 5-mile test and the [unseasonably] warm, dry weather meant a near full field lined up to face the timekeeper. The unexpected halving of the race distance seemed to inspire the field as no less than eight riders came in under 12 minutes with just over a minute covering all their finishing times and less than half a minute between fourth and eighth. Fourth place was filled by Malton’s new signing Mark Hitchcock with 11:29. Hitchcock is returning to racing after a few years break and has clearly not lost the knack of time trialling and, if he puts in a good winter, should be challenging for top spot next year. Scarborough’s Mick Storey, who hasn’t trained seriously for a couple of years now, completed the top five with 11:42; way off his best rides but even without doing any speed-specific training there’s no hiding his class. Last of the Malton riders in the top ten was Colin Baldwin with 11:50 for sixth just pushing Scarborough’s Carl Martin into seventh by one second. Baldwin is clearly back on form again after an over-training flat spot in the middle of the season. Malton riders Paul Ramsey, Kerry Billingham and Ade Wardell (possibly missing the challenge of riding against his usual sparring partner Andy Lowe who’s still in the USA following his epic charity ride across Iowa) brought up the tail end of the field with the irrepressible Keith Buck filling sixteenth place with 14:24 to complete the Malton “sandwich”.
East Riding Road League 19/7/07 What a race Colin, Paul, Gareth and Matthew had on thursday evening. Paul is now in the second group because he is SO FAST. Therefore the three remaining Malton Wheelers worked hard to keep away from the second bunch that was 5 minutes away. At the penultimate lap the second bunch was still 3 minutes away because of the continuous effort from Matthew Gareth and Jason (Obri Racing). We buckled down, spitting out "klingons" off the back until we reached the last lap, only 4 riders now in the lead. We managed to keep away from the rest of the pack, Gareth taking 3rd, Matthew 24th. Unfortunatley, one of the "klingons" used his reserve tank (which was obviously full) to take on Jason, but Matthew and Gareth were very happy with the result. More points for Malton Wheelers. |
29/8/07
Wednesday evening fast ride starts on 29 August. Dust off your lights and check your batteries. 6 :30 start from Malton railway station. Check the links page for route.
Malton Wheelers 10-mile time trial Wednesday 08 August 2007
In the final solo ‘10’ of the season the Wheelers were outclassed by Scarborough Paragon’s John Galway making a rare time trial appearance. Completing the ten-mile course in 21 minutes 57 seconds Galway easily led the field with Malton’s Ged Kerins finishing almost half a minute down in 22:25 for second place. Already seven seconds up on Kerins after the first mile, Galway made the best of the wind-assisted outward leg and was 20 seconds up at the turn. He then ground out a further eight seconds advantage on the headwind return to complete his fine sub-22 ride.
Scarborough also provided third place when Kevin Jones came in with 22:28 while Matthew Enticknap salvaged some pride for the Wheelers by taking fourth place with 23:18. Scarborough, however, had turned out in force and their riders filled fifth and sixth places before Malton’s Colin Baldwin came in with 24:09 to claim seventh. Malton provided the bulk of the rest of the field with riders such as Ade Wardell, Andy Lowe and Steve Suddaby all recording season bests. Malton, of course, were missing some of their top riders: Chris Goodway, who’s had a quiet club season despite good rides in open events and road races; and Paul Hickman, to whom our get-well wishes go, as he is out injured after a nasty training crash involving a car.
As is often the case, the last placed rider provided as exciting a ride as the first. This week the honour again went to Scarborough Paragon as 76 year-old Brian Musson, returning to racing after a 12-year break, finished with 27:57, magnificent.
25 Mile Open Time Trial
What a result for our club veteran, Ged.
Fast approaching 50 years old he has had the result of his life. 54:09 for a 25 mile time trial, beating his personal best from 1995. With this time, a high placing would be expected. He was beaten by one person, Steve Gore-Brown with 53:44, with the rest of the 120 field behind the magic duo.
Seven Scarborough Paragon riders rode the event but failed to beat our Ged. Come on Scarborough, you can do better than that!!! |

 | Seacroft Wheelers CycloCross Warming up for the start of his first CycloCross race at Temple Newsam, Matthew Enticknap fell off his bike on the first corner in the woods and broke his Tibia and Fibia. Looking down at his leg at a jaunty angle he understood this was not normal. Thinking of other riders he shifted his body off the race route(!) and politely asked for assistance. The organisers were fantastic, asking for ambulance assistance, keeping him warm, keeping him conscious and rushing around looking for his partner. He was admitted into surgery the same night where a rod was inserted down his bone and riveted into place and on the Tuesday he was released after he proved that he could use crutches. Unfortunately, it will be at least three months before he can get back on the bike. Interclub 10 Mile Time Trial
Visitor Chris Whitelam (Cottingham Coureurs) with a superb 23 minute 53 second ride won last week’s inter-club 10-mile time trial promoted by Scarborough Paragon Cycling Club. Chris Goodway was the best of the Malton riders; his 24:46 ride being good enough for seventh overall.
A mild, overcast morning greeted the forty or so riders for this traditional season-closer (and last chance of the season to settle the Malton-Scarborough club rivalry). The clement conditions allied with light winds produced a crop of fast rides with a number of riders recording personal bests for the course. In recent years, with the provision of Burton Fleming village hall as HQ, the event has burgeoned. This year was one of the best with riders from Hull, Whitby and Bridlington as well as the main protagonists from Malton and Scarborough.
Although welcome, this increase in popularity has pushed the Malton riders down the pecking order somewhat but nonetheless they made a good showing for such a small club. Chris Goodway, lath-thin following a full season of en ligne and time trial racing, made light work of the hilly course which included 140 metres of climbing. Filling ninth place overall, and second of the Malton riders, was Paul Hickman (24:55) who has managed to hold good form despite an injury-prone season, while Ged Kerins (25:06) completed the top ten.
Solid riding from Malton’s Matthew Enticknap (25:59) and Mark Hitchcock (26:00) secured 12th and 13th places. There’s surely much more to come next year from these two as Enticknap is winding down after a long season and Hitchcock is still feeling his way after a break from racing and was perhaps a little over-awed by the event. Malton also lost two of their riders: Charles Goodway punctured and didn’t finish while Colin Baldwin fared even worse as three punctures denied him even a start.
Despite the on-road rivalry this event is mainly about fun and the camaraderie of cycling. Scarborough Paragon must be thanked for putting on a great event and post-ride spread and, as is traditional, presenting all of the competitors, including puncture victims, with a prize. And for those who didn’t do so well amends can be made next season which is just a few short months away… Watch this, its a must. www.yellowjacket.tv Club Clothing I've had an E-mail from ImpSports, the prices are going up in the new year but if we place an order before, we will get them at 2007 prices. If garments are required please see Matthew Enticknap or E-mail the club with your requirements. A payment of £45 per garment is required at the time of ordering; depending on the garment and how many people order stuff, it will be cheaper/more expensive than this. Hope this makes sence. Velodrome Events We now have the dates for our visit to Manchester Velodrome. Please check the diary for days before 2008. You can now download the form on the "Links page" - click on "download" when the 123 page comes up, then either open or save. |

December 2007
Congratulations go to Paul Hickman, Greg Morgan, Chris and Charles Goodway who have passed their accreditation at Manchester Velodrome on Sunday the 2nd of December. With this "pink slip" they are allowed to enter British Cycling organised races at the velodrome. Good luck to them.
Matthew gets back on his bike on Christmas day, thank goodness.
