The Maltonian
"We offer no apology for this insignificant publication. Financial reasons prevent us from appearing in any better form, and we think that it is more expedient to make our bow in this guise than not at all. May we hope that before next September some of our Leaders will have organized a Magazine worthy of Malton Grammar School?" With these words the official magazine of Malton Grammar School first appeared in April 1912 on sheets of foolscap paper. According to the history of Malton Grammar School published in June 1965, only one copy still exists and is still in the school library. Originally the magazine was published three times a year but in 1948 this was reduced to two due to the high cost of printing. For the same reasons publication was reduced to one a year in 1961. During our time at MGS the Maltonian appeared every September at the beginning of a new school year, recording the highlights of the previous year. The final (126th) issue appeared in July 1971 and marked the end of MGS with a simple white cover and a black border. In 1981 the "New Maltonian" for Malton School was launched but did not survive, the last (5th) issue appeared in April 1984.
Below are links to scanned extracts from the Maltonians which appeared during our years at MGS. |
September 1967
Although this appeared in our first term at MGS it was a record of the previous school year and so is of limited interest to us. |
September 1968
A look back at our first year at Malton Grammar School. Names, places and events will now be familiar. Several times we are even mentioned so some of us had made an impression already! |
September 1969
A review of our second year at MGS. We were nicely settled into the daily routine of school life and taking a much more active part in sports and activities. |
September 1970
Our third year at Malton Grammar School and many of us have made an impression by now, especially in the field of sport. This issue also takes MGS into its last year. |
July 1971
After 125 issues in almost 60 years this was the final issue (No. 126) marking the end of MGS. Not only a review of the school's final year, including the final Speech Day and OMA Reunion, but also a look into future.R.I.P. |
