Chemistry Lab

The Chemistry Lab had changed little over the years as can be seen in this 1991 photo but has since been gutted and refurbished.

Many a lesson was spent here listening to Mr. Greaves not only teaching chemistry but also his many anecdotes and philosophic lectures!

Physics Lab

Of all the classrooms, the Physics Lab has changed the least as can be seen in this photo taken during the tour of the school as part of our reunion in September 2002.

Many of us will remember sitting here watching the Moon Landings on the televison. Others will also remember the old motorbike standing in the corner.

Library

This photo from 1959 shows the library pretty much how we remember it except that the shelves on the left had made way for study booths by the time we started in 1967. The room is now used for computer studies, the library having recently been dismantled and moved to where the MGS kitchen and dining area used to be.

Art Room

This photo is from 1954, soon after the building was erected.
The area seen in this photograph, taken from where Mr. Makins had his desk, was the pottery and modelling section in our time, complete with pottery wheels and a large kiln. To the right, off the photograph, was the main classroom where we did painting and other smaller works of art as well as architecture. Behind the photographer was the printing section.

A short history of the Art Room
To relieve some of the overcrowding in the early 1950's, a prefabricated building was erected in 1953 to the north of the main building. It was partitioned off to form classrooms for Biology, Art and Geography. It was known as "The Prefab". After the major extensions were completed towards the end of the 1950's it became the arts and crafts room with a small drama room complete with stage to the rear.
We always knew this building as the "Art Room" and it was also home to the Chess and Printing Clubs. It later became the 6th Form Common Room after the merger with the Malton County Modern School when MGS became the Malton School East Wing.
The building has since been demolished.
