This photo is from 1954, soon after the building was erected. The area seen in this photograph, taken from where Mr. Makins had his desk, was the pottery and modelling section in our time, complete with pottery wheels and a large kiln. To the right, off the photograph, was the main classroom where we did painting and other smaller works of art as well as architecture. Behind the photographer was the printing section.
A short history of the Art Room To relieve some of the overcrowding in the early 1950's, a prefabricated building was erected in 1953 to the north of the main building. It was partitioned off to form classrooms for Biology, Art and Geography. It was known as "The Prefab". After the major extensions were completed towards the end of the 1950's it became the arts and crafts room with a small drama room complete with stage to the rear. We always knew this building as the "Art Room" and it was also home to the Chess and Printing Clubs. It later became the 6th Form Common Room after the merger with the Malton County Modern School when MGS became the Malton School East Wing. The building has since been demolished. |
