"OMA"

Image taken from "The Maltonian" (September 1967)

The final Old Maltonian Association Annual Reunion Dinner and Dance took place on 29th December 1970. With the disappearance of Malton Grammar School set for the following year, the Headmaster and OMA President, Mr. Taylor, appealed at this final official reunion that these should continue, albeit on a different footing, but by 1973 it was all at an end.
The Association was founded in 1918 by the then headmaster, Ernest L. Watt. Annual General Meetings were held each September and in 1946 a war memorial fund was set up. The final meetings took place on 14th February and 15th March 1973, when it was decided that the Association should be wound up and all funds be passed on to the Bruce Rolls Memorial Fund. A brief history of the "OMA" has been written by Brenda (Holmes) Beal who left MGS in 1953 and this can be read via the Old Maltonian Association page, the link is below.
Perhaps thought should now be given towards rekindling the spirit of the Association, something that must really come from within the school with support from local Old Maltonians. The phrase Old Maltonian referred to former Grammar School pupils, but as the present school also uses “Malton” in its title, I am sure there is nothing to stop it being used for former pupils of the MCM, MGS and the present Malton School.

I for one hope very much that this idea becomes reality one day.
