Dunnington 2 Old Malton 3
29/03/08 - Another blustery day greeted both teams and with the howling wind blowing the length of the pitch, the game was always going to be a game of two halves. With the elements in their favour Dunnington started the stronger, but some excellent defending by Old Malton kept the scores level until they broke with pace on 14 minutes. Amos and Watson played a quick one two down the right and when Pindar collected the cross from Amos, his left foot did the rest when he drilled the ball low into the bottom corner. Dunnington continued to make the most of the strong wind at their backs, but it was the visitors who almost doubled their lead on 25 minutes. Pindar broke clear to release Bell 30 yards from goal, only a great last ditch tackle denied Old Malton’s leading goalscorer the chance to add to his tally. A deflected free kick almost drew the host’s level on 28 minutes, but Thackray managed to get a foot on the shot despite initially going the wrong way. Dunnington were handed a lifeline with ten minutes remaining when a harsh penalty was awarded against Cass, the shot from close range very much ball to hand. This was despatched with ease as Thackray was sent the wrong way. The young keeper should have done better right on the stroke of half time, when a speculative shot from 30 yards squirmed underneath him to give Dunnington a half time lead. The second half was a total transformation as Old Malton threw everything at Dunnington, with Pindar, Bell and Watson all going close in the opening ten minutes. Pindar had a good shout for a penalty turned down on 53 minutes, before Bell pulled a great chance from 18 yards wide six minutes later. With Thackray now almost a lonely spectator, Bell, Cham and Amos all missed good chances from 60 to 65 minutes. Amos looked to have levelled matters on 69 minutes when his blistering pace took him away from his marker, but his lob over the keeper landed inches over the bar on the top of the Dunnington net. With Scott and Shepherd joining in down the flanks, the home defence finally cracked with 12 minutes left on the clock. Readman, Cooke and Pindar got behind the Dunnington defence and with Pindar busting a gut to keep the ball in, his great cross was headed home from ten yards by the alert Cham. The game was only going to produce one winner as Old Malton threw everything at their host’s, Watson and Readman guilty of squandering glorious chances as the game entered stoppage time. With six of the seven added minutes gone and the points looking like being shared, Dunnington were finally undone by another superb clinical break from Old Malton. Amos and Cham played a clever one two allowing Amos to deliver a pin point cross to Bell, who got in front of the keeper to head home and secure a well earned three points for his side. With four league games to go, another away game awaits Old Malton next week, as they make the long trip to relegation threatened Thorpe United. |
Thorpe United 0 Old Malton 1
05/04/08 - For the third Saturday in a row Old Malton were left battling the elements, as well as a plucky Thorpe side that were desperate for the win to maintain their premier league status. A bone hard pitch added to the gale force conditions, making good football from either side almost impossible. The visitors created the first chance of the day on four minutes when Bell beat the offside trap, but his left footed strike was well saved by the Thorpe keeper. The hosts looked dangerous on the break and they had the ball in the net on twelve minutes, only for it to be ruled out when two Thorpe strikers had strayed a couple of yards offside. Readman and Bell carved open the Thorpe backline two minutes later, the cross from Cham flashing across the six yard box with not an Old Malton player in sight. Bell made no mistake on 22 minutes when he out muscled his marker to fire across the keeper from 12 yards. This was harshly ruled out by the referee who claimed Bell had fouled the Thorpe centre back. Old Malton were now getting in their stride when Cass thumped a 25 yard free kick that the keeper could only punch away. To their credit, Thorpe responded well and on 34 minutes they should have drawn level when a miskick by Thackray fell kindly for the Thorpe front man. He made amends though, bringing out a top drawer save from close range when it looked odds on the hosts would snatch the lead. The miss was to prove costly as a minute later Cass hit a superb through ball to the unmarked Cham. His great first touch saw him rattle the crossbar from the edge of the area before Bell pounced to slam the rebound home from eight yards out. Cooper’s foul on 50 minutes almost proved costly when a thumping free kick flew inches the wrong side of Thackray’s left hand post. Old Malton came back well eight minutes later when Readman released Bell who brushed past his marker before bringing out another good block from the home keeper. Towse replaced Amos on 62 minutes as Old Malton surged forward looking for the all important second. Pindar and Bell missed half decent chances on 72 and 75 minutes, before a quick break down the left by Towse and Pindar looked to have sealed the win. The cross from Pindar gifting Bell the chance of the game, but a bad bounce coupled with a tackle from behind saw the ball completely missed by Bell from a couple of yards out. With the game entering the last ten minutes it was another decisive break down Old Malton’s left involving Shepherd, Towse and Pindar that looked to have gifted Bell his second of the day. But another awful bounce in front of goal saw the leagues leading goalscorer pull his shot well wide of the mark. Thorpe nearly made the visitors pay as they threw everyone forward, including their keeper, for the final minutes of the game. A spill by Thackray gifted Thorpe a corner as the game entered stoppage time. But with Old Malton, led by Cass, Cooke, Scott and Shepherd defending for their lives, they saw out the remainder of the game to earn another three valuable points. Hamilton Panthers are next week’s visitors as Old Malton return to home soil following a run of four wins on the road. |
Old Malton 2 Hamilton Panthers 0
12/04/08 - A torrential downpour of rain, sleet and hail fifteen minutes before kick off, turned a great playing surface into something almost resembling a paddy field. As kick off approached the fixture looked in jeopardy, but thankfully with everyone ready and keen to play, commonsense prevailed and the game started a few minutes late. Cham and Bell were denied early chances when the ball got stuck in the water just as they were preparing to shoot. The visitors were also giving a good account of themselves, despite their season taking a nosedive since the start of January. Old Malton should have taken the lead on 14 minutes when a great interception by Towse saw him tear to the by-line, his low driven cross turned against the post by Pindar from six yards. With the conditions taking a turn for the worse, they came to the rescue of Panthers on 24 minutes when a clever run by Cham sent Bell away. He jinked past the last man and round the keeper only to slip at the vital moment with the goal gapping. As the half moved into the last 10 minutes, it looked only a matter of time before constant pressing by Old Malton would give them a deserved lead. Bell fired wide on 37 minutes before two more great chances went begging on 42 and 43 minutes. Shepherd’s strong run and overlap gave Cooper the chance that was well charged down, followed by a slick move between Cham and Cooper that set Pindar up on his favoured left foot, the shot bringing out a cracking save from the stand in Panthers keeper. Towse warmed his hands from 25 yards moments later, before Cooper blazed high over the bar right on the stroke of half time. The second half started poorly for both sides and Old Malton’s task was made more difficult on 58 minutes when a long ball skipped through to Thackray on the edge of his area. With the ball hanging in the mud a clash between the Panthers front man and Old Malton’s keeper saw the latter sustain a nasty injury resulting in Pindar taking the gloves. Amos was introduced during the stoppage and Old Malton finally woke up on 68 minutes with Bell brushing aside his marker before crashing his shot back off the post. Within a minute Old Malton thought they had finally taken the lead when Cooper side footed Towse’s fierce cross, a marginal offside decision going in favour of the visitors. A cheap corner gifted Panthers a half chance on 73 minutes, the header crashing back off the post and away to safety. Amos pulled his shot from the edge of the area inches the wrong side of the post moments later, then with a superb four man passing move with 15 minutes remaining broke the deadlock. With the visitors defence finally breached by Scott, Cooper and Cham, Bell finished the flowing move firing low under the helpless keeper. A second yellow for Cooper with 12 minutes to go put the momentum back with Panthers, leaving Old Malton to battle on with only ten men. But with five minutes remaining another great move by Old Malton made light work of the worsening conditions, to score their second and wrap up the win. Shepherd and Cham got behind the Panthers defence allowing Cham to draw the last man, before squaring to Watson who slammed the ball home from ten yards. With next week’s visitors Huntington requiring only eight points from their last four games to retain their league title, Old Malton will be looking to complete a league double and put the Huntington celebrations on hold for a further week. |
Old Malton 0 Huntington Rovers 1
19/04/08 - Huntington’s narrow win saw them inch ever closer to retaining the league title, with another three points needed from their last two games they look to be almost over the line. Wilford and keeper Thackray both failed late fitness tests, leaving Pindar to deputise in goal for the second week running. Both teams made a bright start, but it was the hosts who carved open the first real chance on 9 minutes. Cham’s interception caught Huntington on the back foot and when he picked out Readman, his snap shot from 25 yards flashed inches wide of the post with the keeper stranded. Huntington responded well on 15 minutes when their leading marksman Dyson looked to have broken free, but a strong last ditch tackle from Cooke just outside the area saved the day. Old Malton started a good spell of pressure on 22 minutes when they forced a couple of quick corners. The first was knocked to the near post by Towse where Bell turned to see his shot scrambled off the line for another corner. This was cleared to the edge of the box where a clumsy tackle saw Bell brought down. Towse saw his free kick clip the top of the wall and away for a goal kick. The visitors came storming back on 25 minutes when a slick three man move saw them get in behind the Old Malton defence, but the weak header straight at Pindar kept the game goalless. With half time approaching a long ball over the top saw Pindar take the ball and man just inside the area. The penalty decision was made worse when Pindar was also shown the red card. Cooke took the gloves and almost pulled off a great save low to his right, but the pace on the ball proved too much giving the visitors a slender half time lead. Scaling became Old Malton’s third keeper of the day coming on for the injured Readman and he should have been tested by Dyson on 47 minutes. The deep cross finding him unmarked at the far post, his thumping header missing the target and going inches over the crossbar. Cass warmed the Huntington keeper’s hands on 50 minutes with a thumping free kick, Bell pouncing on the rebound only to see his shot dragged wide. Ten man Old Malton were now in the driving seat and should have levelled matters with 20 minutes remaining. Towse split the Huntington defence with a great through ball to Bell who turned inside his marker before pulling his shot wide from 12 yards. Within a minute another quick break by the hosts involving Cooper, Cham and Watson saw the Huntington keeper in action again, his reaction save on the six yard line tipping over Bell’s fierce shot. The defending league champions almost doubled their lead with 10 minutes left on the clock when Dyson got between Cass and Cooke 30 yards from goal. He took the chance early with a delightful lob that left Scaling stranded in no man’s land, but thankfully for Old Malton the ball dropped the wrong side of the post. Old Malton went straight to the other end where a long throw by Cooper found the head of Watson, his flick towards the line saw it scrambled away by a handful of Huntington players to secure the win. Old Malton complete their league programme on Monday night with a trip to Dringhouses, where win, lose or draw, they will finish the season with another top four finish. |
Dringhouses 1 Old Malton 8
21/04/08 - Old Malton wrapped up their premier league fixtures on Monday night by demolishing League Cup finalists Dringhouses. The hosts, who were reduced to ten men on 24 minutes with the scores still level, had no answer to a rampant Old Malton who scored at will for the remainder of the game. The contest was pretty even during the opening exchanges, with Dringhouses creating a couple of good chances on 18 and 23 minutes. But the game turned on 24 minutes when Shepherd’s delightful through ball down the left flank released Bell. With only the keeper to beat, he was chopped down on the edge of the area leaving the referee no choice but to send off keeper Barkway. This signalled the flood gates to open as Bell pounced on 27 minutes to give Old Malton the lead. Readman’s telling free kick on 37 minutes was cleared to the edge of the area where Cham met the ball on the half volley to double his side’s advantage. Pindar should have made it three two minutes later when Towse set him free with a great reverse ball, but his shot flew straight at the replacement keeper from ten yards. He made amends right on the stroke of half time when Towse’s driven cross was too hot to handle, snapping up the half chance for Old Malton’s third. The second half proved to be a procession as Bell grabbed his second on 59 minutes, before another fumble by the keeper gifted Cooper the chance to bang in number five with 27 minutes still to go. This signalled a double substitution for Old Malton as Towse and Cham made way for youngsters Thackray and Hall. Great work by Bell to get out of the corner gave Thackray a glorious chance two minutes later, but the second team hotshot missed the chance, a wicked bounce producing a total miss from six yards. Bell showed him the way with two superb finishes on 79 and 85 minutes to take his total for the season to 38 in all competitions. The large Old Malton following gave him a great hand when he made way for Wilford who was returning after a long spell out with groin trouble. Cooper headed home on 88 minutes to take the score to eight, before an injury time effort finally got the hosts on the score sheet to spoil an otherwise flawless display by stand in keeper Corner. Bell’s four goal tally took all the plaudits, but there were also excellent performances from the tireless Cooper and the makeshift back four of Baker, Readman, Scott and Shepherd. Old Malton take a well earned rest now to prepare for the season’s showpiece final when they tackle newly promoted Poppleton. This takes place on Saturday 3rd May at Tockwith – 2.00pm kick off. |
Old Malton 2 Poppleton United 1
03/05/08 - Old Malton wrapped up their season in style with a narrow win over newly promoted Poppleton to capture the York & District FA Senior Cup. With Old Malton’s strong finish to the season claiming them third place in the Premier League, they were hot favourites to take the prestigious trophy back to Malton. Their odds were slashed even further when they made a dream start snatching the lead as early as the third minute. Thackray’s long goal kick was flicked into the path of Bell by Cooper and once the leagues leading goalscorer got past his man the outcome was inevitable. A thumping shot from just inside the area going past the keeper in a flash. Poppleton responded in the right manner and tested Thackray straight from the kick off, the young keeper saving low to his right from 25 yards. He was beaten in the fourth minute, but as the ball rolled towards the line full back Shepherd made up ground to clear the danger. The underdogs were now into their stride, giving the Old Malton defence a torrid time as the post came to their rescue on 14 minutes when a wind assisted cross deceived everyone. But despite having the lion’s share of possession, Poppleton couldn’t break through an overworked Old Malton defence and the tide began to turn on 18 minutes. Cham ripped a cracking shot over the bar, quickly followed by a similar effort from the left foot of Pindar that brought a great save out of the Poppleton keeper. With the storm weathered, a patient build up by Old Malton grabbed them a two goal advantage just before the half hour mark. Shepherd played the ball into the feet of Wilford who turned inside his man to get his shot away from 12 yards. And when the ball broke free from the keepers grasp, Cooper pounced from six yards to slot the ball home. Poppleton came back again with another good spell of pressure, Thackray tipping over from distance before Scott made a timely tackle on 40 minutes. The game was nearly over for Poppleton two minutes later when Pindar’s cross was too much for their centre back, his headed clearance falling to Bell who hit a tremendous volley from just outside the area. With goal number forty for the season written all over it, the Poppleton keeper produced a wonder save to push the shot round his left hand post. The second half started badly for Old Malton when McGinty had to be replaced on 51 minutes, Cass was introduced at centre back with Readman joining Cooper in the middle of the park. As Old Malton took time to reorganise Poppleton had another good spell, but good handling by Thackray took care of matters with a couple of tidy saves. Bell was in his stride on 61 minutes with two surging runs in quick succession, both having the Poppleton defence at sixes and sevens. Wilford’s lay off since mid March began to take its toll and he was replaced by Towse on 67 minutes. A slight piece of hesitation by young right back Scott moments later gave Poppleton the chance they’d been working hard for all afternoon. Pressure from their wide man saw Scott lose possession 30 yards from goal, allowing him to break away and finish in style past Thackray. The game was now end to end as it entered the last ten minutes and Poppleton almost shot themselves in the foot on 85 minutes. Cham and Bell released Towse who jinked past two men to deliver a wicked cross that the Poppleton defence couldn’t deal with, a headed clearance being directed past the keeper and inches over the crossbar. Two minutes later an even better break involving Towse, Readman and Bell gifted Cham a glorious chance on the edge of the area, but the normally clinical wide man fired high over the bar. The game still had time to serve another twist on 89 minutes when a strong break down Old Malton’s left saw the ball dragged back into the path of a Poppleton midfielder, his first time effort crashing back off Thackray’s crossbar. This was to be Poppleton’s last chance as Old Malton safely negotiated the three minutes of stoppage time to take the honours.
