Old Malton Res 4 Kartiers Res 2

Old Malton finished off their season in style, winning the Reserve Cup Final in front of a large crowd at York RI on Monday evening. Kartiers were the first to get a shot in on goal after two minutes when Davies conceded a free-kick, but this was comfortably dealt with by keeper Jacques. The play switched to the opposite end and Old Malton were awarded a free-kick for a foul on Brown three minutes later. This was despatched by Bradshaw from the edge of the area into the top corner, giving the Kartiers' keeper no chance.A mix up between Lealman and Jacques on seven minutes was nearly costly, but more attacking football by Old Malton brought their second goal with 11 minutes played. Ward and Biggins combined well down the left to force Kartiers to concede the corner. This was swung into the six-yard box by Lander and the ball broke to Hoggard, who smashed it across the keeper into the opposite corner. Bradshaw and then Lander both tried from distance, before Kartiers broke quickly down the right, forcing Lealman to clear off the line. Ward split the Kartiers defence with an inch-perfect pass after half an hour, with the keeper just beating Brown to the ball on the edge of the area. Kartiers then enjoyed a good spell of pressure, but Old Malton's back four of Clapham, Lealman, Hoggard and Ward looked comfortable in front of keeper Jacques. Old Malton increased their lead to 3-0 after 33 minutes to put themselves almost out of reach. Lander's free-kick was blocked and partially cleared to Davies who shot inches wide. However, Kartiers refused to give up and Mark Lucas gave them hope when he pulled a goal back in the 40th minute. Five minutes after the break Kevin Jacques in the Old Malton goal pulled of a diving save but could not hold the ball, and Kartiers' Neil Taylor pounced on the rebound to reduce the arrears. After a spell of Kartiers pressure Old Malton made sure of the trophy with their fourth goal. Peter Voss in the Kartiers goal made a great save but the ball ran kindly for Bradshaw to slot home his second strike.

Old Malton crowned Champions

Old Malton travelled to Kartiers' ground at Selby on Saturday, knowing that the league title was within their grasp. If Old Malton won at Kartiers and Boroughbridge lost at Pocklington, then no one could equal Old Malton's points total. The game started brightly for Old Malton. In the first minute, a loose ball was pounced on by Steve Boyd, who craftily lobbed the keeper to score. Three minutes later, a Kartiers defender purposely handled to stop a certain goal. The referee yellow carded him and Michael Henderson duly scored from the spot. Both sides then settled into a more mundane performance, with Kartiers having plenty of possession but no clear shots at goal. Half-time came and coach Shaun McGinty gave the players a roasting, sparing no one. Three minutes after the interval, Tommy Oxtoby scored with an excellent shot. The only incident of note for the next 40 minutes was the injured Chris Pullan being substituted by Paul Boyes and Oxtoby being replaced by Neil Wilford. In the 90th minute, the game suddenly exploded. A good passing move allowed Cooke to square the ball to Henderson, who side-footed the fourth goal. Almost immediately from the restart, Old Malton won the ball and attacked. Simon Cooke was brought down in the area and a penalty was awarded. Goalkeeper Aaron McDermid was called up and he duly scored his first penalty. By this time (the 95th minute) there was an air of elation as the score from Twickenham had come through and Boroughbridge had lost 2-0 to Pocklington - Old Malton had won the York Premier league for the first time in their 100-year history, and Malton and Norton had won the Tetley Vase final at Twickenham. With four league games and the cup final still to play, Old Malton have a busy two weeks ahead. Next Saturday, they play away at Boroughbridge and on Tuesday, May 1, at York RI's ground, play their cup final game against Pocklington, kick off 7.30pm. The last game of the season, at home to Kartiers, has yet to be arranged.

Pocklington 0 Old Malton 2

The task of clinching the title had been made easier the previous Wednesday, April 18, when a large number of supporters travelled to watch Old Malton beat Pocklington 2-0. The first half was deadlocked as both sides cancelled each other out. However, on the stroke of half-time, Thornton's free-kick confused everyone as it curled into the net. The second half was more open, but Neil Wilford put the result beyond doubt with a tremendous left-foot strike from 25 yards. Keeper Aaron McDermid had only one save to make despite Pocklington having the lion's share of the possession. The whole team showed plenty of effort and commitment with impressive performances from Matthew Prichard and Michael Henderson.

Dringhouses 1 Old Malton 2

Old Malton travelled as champions to Dringhouses on Monday, April 23, severely depleted in players and with a number of walking wounded. There was no possibility of an easy game, however, as Dringhouses were determined to bring the champions down. After ten minutes of end-to-end play, Michael Henderson pounced on a poor back pass and made no mistake in beating the goal keeper. The game then went Old Malton's way as they pinned back the home side. The second half continued in the same vein but when a free-kick to Dringhouses was given 40 yards out, the ball was not cleared and Dringhouses scored. In the 78th minute, Michael Henderson topped off an outstanding performance when he squared a perfect ball into the path of Phil Hill, who scored. Dringhouses still kept up the pressure but Old Malton held firm and all the players kept their cool to win a particularly hard-fought match.
