Old Malton Res 3 Pocklington 2 (After extra-time)

Old Malton completed the first leg of a possible Cup double, with an incredible 3-2 victory over Pocklington at York RI’s new Lane ground on Thursday night. The game exploded into life in extra time when all the goals were scored, and it needed a last minute save by keeper Jacques to deny Pocklington from taking it into a penalty shoot-out. Early on, a shot by Pock’s Daniels brought Jacques into action, but a bad mistake later allowed Fennel the chance of a shot, which went wide. Pocklington were on top at this stage with Old Malton unable to get into there normal passing game. The best chance of the half fell to Towse who shot over having left his marker for dead. In the second half Old Malton began to get on top, but they fell foul of Pocklington’s offside trap on more than one occasion. With the game drifting into extra time Pocklington’s Gamble went inches wide with a great effort. Just as it appeared the game was going to a penalty shoot out, Old Malton took the lead with Boyes heading home a Towse cross 8 minutes into the first period. Pocklington were awarded a free kick 25 yards out when Shepherd fouled the Pocklington wide man. Up stepped Smales to hit an unstoppable shot into the top left-hand corner and level the scores. With their tails up Pocklington took the lead 5 minutes into the second period with a Falkingham header. But within a minute Old Malton were back on level terms when McGinty smashed home a badly bouncing ball which had been whipped in from the left by Towse. With Pocklington reeling McGinty was on hand 5 minutes later to drive home from 10 yards, Towse once again being the provider. In the breathtaking final minutes a great save by Jacques denied Pocklington the chance in a penalty shoot out. Towse, who ran riot in extra time won the man of the match award, closely followed by 2-goal hero McGinty. Old Malton’s manager Richard Taylor was full of praise for his side’s never-say-die attitude. "We were poor in the first half, and fortunate to get in at half time on level terms. The players were edgy and didn’t do themselves justice, but we got stronger as the game went on, and the comeback was unbelievable. A lot of young players came of age tonight, which will stand them in good stead for many years to come." The League Reserve Cup Final against Osbaldwick takes place at York RI’s ground on Monday 13th May, 7.30pm kick off.

Old Malton Res 3 Osbaldwick 2

A wet and windy night at York RI’s New Lane ground, saw Old Malton retain the York Reserve League Cup, and in doing so completed a unique Cup double. As in last week’s final the game was won at the death in a pulsating finish, when once again it looked like another bout of extra-time. With a strong breeze at their backs Old Malton started brightly and created the first clear cut opening on 14 minutes. Lander went past three defenders and into the box before he overran the ball forcing a fumbled block by the Osbaldwick keeper. Boyes was first to react, but shot high and wide from 8 yards with the goal at his mercy. The next 20 minutes was just edged by Old Malton without them ever getting into top gear, but they fell behind to a shocking goal on 34 minutes. A corner by Osbaldwick was cleared to the edge of the area before it was lobbed back towards goal. With Bradshaw on the post and Jacques on his line, the situation seemed to be under control, but a farcical mix-up saw the ball drop in and under the bar. This was a severe blow to Old Malton who had never really been threatened up to this point. They responded well with Scaling bringing a good save from the Osbaldwick keeper from Towse’s free kick on 43 minutes. The second half saw Old Malton take a grip on the game and they got a deserved equaliser on 55 minutes. Bradshaw looked to be well shackled before he hit a superb left foot volley from 25 yards, which ended up in the top corner leaving the keeper nowhere. At last Old Malton began to show some resemblance of a side looking to finish the season on a high, and they nipped into the lead 8 minutes later. A flowing move down the right involving Milner, Ward then Boyes saw the latter break to the byeline before whipping in a good low cross. Bradshaw dummied the ball allowing McGinty to arrive and pass the ball into the bottom corner from 10 yards out. Old Malton continued to press looking for the killer third goal, but stout defending by their opponents kept the game finally balanced. Old Malton introduced all three subs Smith, Cooper and Preston as the game entered the final quarter, with neither side looking like scoring as both defences looked in control. But with 3 minutes of normal time remaining, Osbaldwick score a dramatic late equaliser. A dubious corner decision went Osbaldwick’s way, and from the resulting goalmouth scramble a shot went through a pack of players and into the back of the net. With extra time looming Old Malton gave it one last push, with Shepherd bursting down the left to win a corner 2 minutes into stoppage time. Smith whipped in the corner kick to the near post where Preston flicked it on into the path of Boyes who headed home from 3 yards. Osbaldwick hardly had time to restart before the referee blew the final whistle. Manager Richard Taylor was a relieved man having watched his side make hard work of their second final. "We certainly like to do things the hard way." he said. "Having taken the lead, without playing anywhere near our best, we should have coasted home. Osbaldwick worked hard and kept going, but the goals we conceded, especially the first, were very disappointing". Lone striker Boyes, who worked tirelessly up front, was voted the man of the match, with Milner just edging out Marwood for the runners up slot.
