Old Malton 2 Kirkbymoorside 2 (OM won 3-2 on penalties)

12/04/06 - A crowd of almost 300 turned up at Pickering Town’s Mill Lane ground to watch Old Malton overturn a two-goal half time deficit and snatch the Scarborough & District Cup in a tense penalty shoot out. The opening exchanges were very even with neither side creating any clear-cut chances. Kirkby had the ball in the net from a 21st minute corner, the referee disallowing it following a foul on keeper Towse. More pressure gained them another corner on the half hour mark, right back Thackray coming to the rescue with a header off the line. The Scarborough league champions were now well on top, Cox firing wide on 31 minutes, then a last ditch tackle by Thackray 5 minutes later conceding yet another corner. An almighty goalmouth scramble from the corner ended with Cox firing home from close range to give Kirkby the lead. Old Malton were now on the back foot and looking to get to half time without conceding another, but disaster struck in the second minute of stoppage time. Strickland’s cross into the 6-yard box looked harmless enough, but Cox came from nowhere to out jump a static Towse to double his side’s advantage. Old Malton now had a mountain to climb, and climb it they did, when a transformed team reduced the arrears within 7 minutes of the restart. Wilford’s surging run proving too much for the Kirkby keeper Collier, his needless foul giving Old Malton the chance they were waiting for. Regular penalty taker Bradshaw never saw the ball as a confident Wilford took charge and slammed the ball into the bottom corner. A minute later Pritchard was replaced by Newton as Old Malton moved to a more attacking formation, the change reaping almost immediate dividends. Hopwood’s header found Drew who fed substitute Newton, his strength took him away from the Kirkby back line before firing a superb strike past the helpless Collier. Old Malton almost shot themselves in the foot moments later, Cooke’s poor header allowing Strickland to break free, his fierce shot crashing back off the crossbar. The game was now end to end as both sides went looking for the third goal, Strickland again forcing a good stop by Towse, then Brown almost converting Wilford’s corner when his header went fractionally wide. Drew’s ongoing groin problem saw him replaced by McGinty as the game entered the last 20 minutes. Cox’s mazy run on 74 minutes saw him burst past three Old Malton players, his weak left footed shot easy pickings for keeper Towse. A storming finish by Old Malton saw Newton’s volley bring out a great save from Collier, then a superb run and shot in the 93rd minute by Wilford curled agonisingly past the post. Old Malton’s frailty at set pieces nearly cost them dear as with the last kick of the match a Kirkby free kick almost crept in at the far post. Extra time belonged to Old Malton as they piled on the pressure, Bradshaw, McGinty and Wilford all going close in a pulsating second period. Then with only 2 minutes left on the clock Thackray and Bradshaw opened up the Kirkby defence for Newton to break clear, his rasping shot fizzing inches over the top corner. Wilford and Newton converted their penalties for Old Malton along with Barnett for Kirkby, before a miss by Chris Hodgson gave Old Malton a 2-1 advantage. Collier’s great save denied Cooke to drag Kirkby back in it, then Towse regained his side the initiative saving Strickland’s low effort. The nerves were now playing their part as Thackray blazed over the bar before Ferguson slotted home to level things at 2-2. Bradshaw smashed the ball into the bottom corner leaving Andy Hodgson the task of taking the last penalty and moving things to a sudden death shoot out. The pressure proved too much as his shot flew over the bar handing Old Malton the cup.
