About us

Background

Ryedale's Child and Youth Projects was established in January 2001 by a number of professionals working in the voluntary and statutory sectors with children and young people. Its main objective is to address the lack of accessibility to child and youth provision throughout the Ryedale area. It is not intended to duplicate any existing provision but rather to work with other organisations to expand on such services and create a focal point through which new opportunities can be embraced.

Ryedale's Child and Youth Projects supports the UN Convention and promotes articles 7 & 31:

Article 7:
"The child shall have full opportunity to play and recreation."

Article 31:

"Every child has the right to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child and to participate freely in cultural life and the arts."

Mission Statement

Ryedale's Child & Youth Projects is committed to raising an awareness of the importance of development in children/young people through the provision of play, sport, and leisure activities. Thus it supports the ethos that every child is entitled to exercise their right as an individual, and therefore the services provided are underpinned by the needs of each child. It aims to become a centre of excellence in providing services which incorporate choice, inclusion, and empowerment irrespective of ability, race, gender, colour, creed and socio-economic background.

Values

We belive that all children/young people have a right to access play, sport and leisure activities which are varied and designed to be fun, creative and stimulating. They should be offered the choice and opportunity to participate in the enjoyment of such activities, and where appropriate the planning and implementation of activities.

Staff

Children and young people have right to be supported by enthusiastic and experienced workers who can empathise and relate to their needs whilst ensuring that all health and safety standards are adhered to. All workers are police checked before employment with us and are appropriately trained to deliver a service which meets the needs of the child/young person.

Aims

1. To develop a 'one stop' resource centre providing:
(a) A network of child/youth related services
(b) An information centre
(c) Recycled activity materials
(d) A mobile toy/resource library

2. To create and implement service delivery:
(a) Training/workshops
(b) Training facilities
(c) Creche services
(d) Playschemes/Holiday clubs
(e) Out of school clubs
(f) Youth provision
(g) Trips out

3. To act as a community voice and representative group for children, young people and their parent's/carer's, as well as child/youth related services which are at present under represented.

4. To provide an opportunity for other child and youth related organisations to offer services from the centre.

Last years provision

We implemented 50 activity days for 5-12 year olds over the summer in 16 venues throughout Ryedale. The children were offered a variety of activities including art, craft, sport and games. Workshops were incorporated into several of these sessions providing the children with the opportunity to work alongside professionals. These included music technology (the children created their own tunes and cut them onto disc), circus skills, dance and movement, mural painting, and break-dancing. Live music was provided by visiting musicians and the library also paid several visits to work with the children on carnival masks. Four workshop days were also implemented for the 12-16 year olds including break-dancing, rapping, drama and stage/screen combat. 797 children and young people attended these events.

Ryedale's Child & Youth Projects has been supported by:

There will also be a number of workshops for young people aged 10 -16 years. Details will be available shortly.

Research:

We are conducting some research on behalf of the Ryedale Regeneration Partnership on the type of information children and young people would like to be able to access, and how they would like to access it.

Forum for Voluntary Child & Youth Groups

If you run a small voluntary group providing activities for children or young people in Ryedale the forum members would love to meet you. This forum is designed to help club leaders access information, put their views, and the views of the children or young people they are working with across, share information resources and develop inter-club activities.

Funding Available for youth groups

We are currently administering the SRB small grants fund on behalf of the Ryedale Regeneration Partnership. There are revenue and capital grants available of up to £1,000 for small groups with an annual income of up to £15,000, and who work with 10-30 year olds. We urge local youth groups to contact us now so that they don't miss out! For further details send us an email.
