Welcome to Sheriff Hutton Parish Council's Web Site
We believe that Sheriff Hutton is a special place and the Parish Council, with many other organisations and individuals within the Parish, work together to maintain what is best in community life for a small village of 1,000 inhabitants. We can do no better than quote from the Village Design Statement which has recently been adopted by Ryedale District Council as Supplementary Planning Guidance:-
"The village of Sheriff Hutton possesses a unique character of many ingredients. Situated between the Vale of York and the Howardian Hills, and standing on a ridge, it is the gateway to some of the finest countryside in North Yorkshire. The village itself, dominated and centred on the great Neville Castle is Norman in its underlying structure. The village today consists of a collection of houses of all periods and many styles representing the development of a North Yorkshire village through the ages. It is a fine historic village with a strong sense of personal identity and social inclusiveness. Most importantly, its people are a real community. Whether they are true locals with long standing connections or incomers, they have an intense feeling of belonging here and have the village's life and welfare in their hearts. Some indications of the strength of the community can be seen in the Village Hall, for which the village raised considerable sums or justified external grant funding and a further success in winning the Community Award in the Village of the Year Competition. They are determined that this ethos be preserved".
The above is our view but John Rushton, in his book 'The Ryedale Story says of Sheriff Hutton:-
"Few villages touch national history so closeley as Sheriff Hutton, still a real village despite recent grouth. Castle ruins dominate the scene and there is fine country never far away".
Maybe that sounds a bit romantic but there is a very practical side to Sheriff Hutton which is a modern village with excellent facilities. The more noteable of these are listed below:-
1.A modern village hall with excellent facilities.
2.A County Primary School which serves the adjacent villages of Lilling, Whenby, Cornborough, Stittenham and Flaxton.
3Two churches - the 900 year old St Helen's and the Methodist Church.
4.The Village News - delivered each month to every household in the Parish.
5.A very active Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.
6.Two public houses.
7.A wide variety of sports and social groups.
8.Many small businesses providing a very wide variety of services.
Details of the above, and much more, is planned for inclusion in this site. Be sure to keep up to date by visiting again shortly.
