Slingsby lies 6 miles from Malton on the B1257 road to Helmsley and around 2 miles from Castle Howard and 16 miles from York. The earliest historical information on Slingsby occurs in the Domesday Book, where it is recorded that "In Selungesbi there are fourteen carucates of land to be taxed. Two thanes held this for two manors. There is a priest there with eighteen villeins having ten ploughs and twenty areas of meadow. It was valued at 70 shillings and is now worth 30 shillings".

Slingsby is a thriving village and has a village shop, public house, bakery, TV and electrical goods shop, restaurant, tea shop, garage and car sales showroom, second-hand and antique goods shop, two caravan and camping sites (one a Camping and Caravanning Club site and one also with static caravans), sports and social club, mobile library, fish and chip truck calling twice a week, mobile butcher, newspaper deliveries, holiday cottages and accommodation, school, village hall, parish church and Methodist chapel, regular bus services, sports field and a maypole on the village green. A ruined 17th century manor house ("Slingsby castle") stands on the site of the former medieval castle.

Many residents work for local businesses, while others find employment in the surrounding areas of York, Scarborough and Leeds.
