YOUR PARISH

Slingsby is 6 miles on the B1257 road from Malton to Helmsley and around 2 miles from Castle Howard and 16 miles from York.The earliest historical information on Slingsby occurs in the Domesday Book, wherein it is recorded that " In Selungesbi there are fourteen carucates of land to be taxed. Two thanes held this for two manors. There is a priest there with eighteen villeins having ten ploughs and twenty areas of meadow.It was valued at 70 shillings and is now worth 30 shillings"

Slingsby is a thriving village and has a: Post Office and village shop, public house, bakery, tv and electrical goods shop, restuarant, tea shop, garage and car sales showroom, second hand and antiques goods shop, two caravan and camping sites (one a Camping and Caravanning Club site and one also with static caravans),sports and social club, mobile library, fish and chip truck calling twice a week, mobile butcher, newspaper deliveries, holiday cottages and accomodation, school, village hall, Parish Church and a Methodist Church, regular bus services, ruined 17th century castle, sportfields and a Maypole on the Village Green.
As well as in local businesses many residents are in employment in the surrounding area, York, Scarborough and Leeds.

The Parish Council of Slingsby, South Holme and Fryton is part of the Local Government of North Yorkshire together with North Yorkshire County Council and Ryedale District Council. The County Council is responsible for services such as Highways, Education, Libraries, Social Services and Strategic Planning. The District Council for local services such as planning, street cleaning and refuse collection. The Parish Council is that part of Government closest to the people being the only level of Government that represents residents at Parish Level. Slingsby, South Holme and Fryton Parish Council raises income from council tax, a precept on your rate bill. This is used to maintain and improve where possible services in the Parish. The duties of the Parish Council incude the administration and maintenance of the cemetery, some street lighting and some grass cutting. The Parish Council also has the power to comment on planning applications and can be represented at Public Inquires. Similarly it can advise the County and District Authorities on the views of residents.
All meetings of the Parish Council are held in the Village Hall, usually on Wednesdays at 7.30pm and are open to the Public. They are led by the Chairman and advised by a Clerk who is there to see business is conducted within the law.
Forthcoming meetings will be held on 19 November 2003, 4 February 2004, 5 May 2004 and 21 April 2004

Parish notices are at present displayed as appropriate on the Village Notice Board which is situated near the Village Green next to the telephone box.
