----- St. Mary's 1967 Leavers -----
Dedicated to the memory of Ian B. McDonald "Mac" Our Headmaster Welcome! Actually, I was only at St. Mary’s R.C. Primary School for about a year, my final year of primary education leading up to the “11+” exams in 1967, as they were called then. Most of my primary education was at St. Joseph’s in Pickering, when the school was still behind the church. As my father was stationed in Kirkbymoorside and later Lastingham with the Police, this was the closest Catholic Church. After my father’s posting to Malton in 1966 I started with my sister Ann at St. Mary’s. I moved up to the then Grammar School (MGS) in September 1967 and so started secondary education at the “big” school. My mother taught the “middle” class at the St. Mary’s in 1966 and again from 1970 until she retired in 1990 so most of the pupils from our era and perhaps even their children will remember her. The headmaster was Mr. Ian B. McDonald, or “Mac” as most adults knew him. I have dedicated this site to his memory; he is buried near my father in Malton Cemetery. This site is a spin-off from my main project for the Malton Grammar School 1967 entrants, which is also off “This is Ryedale/CommuniGate”. Anthony Drinkwater found me recently via the MGS site in his search for Richard Dawson, finally phoning me one evening from Sierra Leone! I put him in touch with not only Richard, but also Kevin Arbuthnot and Susan Evans (now Hesp) who all, like me, left St. Mary’s in July 1967. Somebody dropped a hint about starting a similar project to “MGS 1967” for us St. Mary’s leavers and this site has evolved out of that and may eventually lead to a reunion. Time will tell! Simon J.
