Union Rovers 1 v 1 Terrington Glory
The Rovers didn't have the ideal start to their season when before the game had kicked off, goalkeeper Blanchard went missing. In desperation they managed to sign Ady Burdett who had a good game until pulling a hamstring with 20 minutes to go forcing Paul Holder to take over. In a game of two contrasting halves, the Union were dominated in the first going in 1-0 down following a goal from Paley. In the second half it was a complete turnaround, with the Rovers on top and forcing an equalizer through an own goal although credit must go to Wayne Pilmore who did try and claim it! With important players missing, it means there is going to good competition for places this season.
Team: Burdett, D.Young, Holder, Brown, Dunning, Readman, Bothamley, Jeffles, C.Wilkinson, Bell, Pilmore.Subs:Sharrat, Cooke |
Kirkdale 6 v 0 Union Rovers
The Rovers again with Blanchard failing to turn up had to sign a new goalkeeper, this time John Towse took between the sticks. A team due to unavailability of some players and the return of others looked completely different from the one which started on Saturday. However the Rovers started slowly and were 2-0 down after 10 minutes and never recovered against a hungrier attack minded opposition. Things went from bad to worse and the team had no answer to the Kirkdale forwards. The second half was much of the same and it was a relief when the 90 minutes were up.
Team: Towse, D.Young, S.Young, Readman, Sawdon, Sharrat, Abbey, Bothamley, Pilmore, Bell, Holder Subs: Colgan, Nelson, Cooke

Union Rovers 1 v 4 Old Malton 3rds
Another game and another completely different team line up for the Union in a season which hasn't started yet. More players were unavailable due to various reasons and with Old Malton also struggling for a team a cancellation was agreed only for the league to decree that the game had to take place. The game started with the Union having their 3rd different goalkeeper in the reserves John Crowe who made some excellent saves, and being captained by Andy Colgan who covered every blade of grass in trying to drive his team forward. Despite looking vulnerable at the back, the Union looked potent down the right flank and were causing endless problems for Old Malton. Two sloppy goals were conceded with Mat Sawdon replying before half time, with his first goal for the club. 2-1 down at half time the Union were looking to attack from the off in the second half, but as much as they worked the chances didn't really come their way. A 3rd Old Malton goal halfway through the second half from a twice taken free kick didn't help, but the game was finished in the final minute when on a counter attack Old Malton headed in a fourth. Lots of room for improvement and with important players coming back for mid week a chance to get the season started.
Team: Crowe, D.Young, Nelson, Jackson, Sawdon, Sharrat, Colgan, Cooke (J.Wilkinson), C.Wilkinson (Gordon), Bell, Pilmore

Terrington Glory 2 v 3 Union Rovers
Match report to follow |
Union Rovers 1 v 1 Thornton Dale
Two points dropped rather than one gained will be thoughts of the Union players and management after this game. Although they weren't at their best, they restricted Dale to only a few half chances and Dunning and Brown generally had few moments of worry during their afternoon. Lots of possession for the Rovers, especially during the last 15 minutes of the first half and most of the second didn't result in too many clear cut chances however. After falling behind to a sucker punch goal on the break when the portly Dale forward beat the offside trap and scored, the Union responded with effort which deserved 3 points. An Ashley Cooke hooked effort with 25 minutes to go signalled the recovery but apart from a couple of Richard Abbey free kicks and a well saved header the Rovers efforts were going unrewarded. Points are still required for safety but at least we can solace from the alround team effort and return from injury of Chris Hodgson whose goals have been missed.
Team: Towse, Todd, S.Young, Dunning, Brown, D.Young, Cooke (Hodgson), Rowley, Abbey, Bell (Pilmore), Thornton

Union Rovers 4 v 2 Gillamoor
The Union Rovers first team recent good form continued with this excellent win over third place Gillamoor. Again employing their 3-5-2 formation they grabbed hold of the game after the first ten minutes and apart from 15 minutes in the middle of the game completely dominated. First goal came after 10 minutes after a good run and cross when Chris Hodgson scored, this was quickly followed by a second when Lee Dunning scored a great goal after good work by Duane Young. With Glyn Brown dominating in the air it was a surprise when Gillamoor pulled a goal back shortly before half time from a corner. Shortly after half time Gillamoor equalized with a well struck long range free kick. Now with the points on the line it was the time most prepared to graft who would take the rewards. This was the Union for shortly after Gillamoors equalizer, a great through ball from Ashley Cooke led to Lee Dunnings second goal. To make the game safe Pete Tiffeny back to his best scored with a great strike after good work by Lee Dunning. Tiffeny could have made it a thrashing if he had not hit the post and put another good chance wide near the end. A good all round performacne however with Glyn Brown man of the match close run by Lee Dunning.
Team: Towse, Abbey, Brown, S.Young, Todd (C.Cooke), Rowley, Hodgson (Gordon), D.Young, A.Cooke, Tiffeny, Dunning

Union Rovers 2 v 1 Kirkdale
The Union revival continues with another good 3 points earned from a tough but deserved win. In a league where bar the top 3, all the teams are close together and points are precious this time of the season. A good start from the Union resulted in a great strike from Paul Holder back after suspension and his edge of the box shot flew into the net. Ashley Cooke had a good effort soon after but chances were few and far between for either team. As previous games the Union started slowly in the second half and were soon level after a goal mouth scramble. This seemed to galvanise the team however and with Tiffeny and Dunning looking sharp up front a chance came to inform Cooke and he made no mistake. No real scares for the team in the last quarter of an hour and the 3 points were won. Perm was man of the match but it was a good team effort alround.
Team: Towse, Sharrat, D.Young, S.Young, Abbey, Brown, Hodgson (C.Cooke), Holder, A.Cooke, Tiffeny, Dunning
