The Oldest Rotary Outside the USA
 | Notable Members: Douglas Reeve, left, and Bishop Dominic Walker were both Brighton Rotarians
The following article by Past-President Laurie Hilditch was published in The Argus on 12th June 2004. Note that the Rotary Club of Brighton claims to be the first town club to be established outside the USA. We are preceded in the official RIBI club roster by 8 UK city clubs, but only just!
When Brighton's business community got together to form a Rotary Club more than 90 years ago, little did they realise that they would be creating a unique record in Rotary International circles, by making Brighton the first town outside the USA to have a Rotary Club, a "number one" spot the Rotary Club of Brighton is proud to hold.
Rotary began in the United States, with its first club being founded in Chicago in 1905. The initial expansion beyond America was not, as one would have expected, into neighbouring Canada, but to this side of the Atlantic, where between 1911 and 1913 the first Rotary Clubs were established in London, Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester.
Compared with those cities, Brighton had limited business and commercial interests from which to draw its members, yet sufficient businessmen were found to begin the process of forming a club and, after months of canvassing and extending invitations, the inaugural meeting took place at the Royal York Hotel on 8th April 1913, its first President being Edward Geere, then Mayor of Brighton.
Many other well-known Brightonians have passed through our doors, including Magnus Volk, Douglas Reeve and, more recently, Dominic Walker, now Bishop of Monmouth.
Rotary International's greatest ongoing achievement began in 1980 when, in conjunction with the World Health Organisation, they entered into a joint commitment to eradicate poliomyelitis worldwide by 2005, the year in which Rotary, with its 1.25 million men and women members in 166 countries, will celebrate its 100 years of service to others.
Currently there are more than 50 Rotary Clubs in East and West Sussex, giving their support to that project as well as continuing to serve the needs within their own localities.
