Where is the Community Centre?
 | The South Portslade Community Centre is on Church Road just south of Portslade Health Centre with Vale Recreation Ground just behind it. Part of St Andrew's Church was made redundant but the main structure remains and the community centre, with renovations to the church, was built in keeping with and as part of the existing building. The centre has a separate entrance on the side nearest the Health Centre.
Plans & Costs Our architect, Clive Mercer worked with the CAPS, drafting several plans & holding Planning for Real sessions with the local community to incorporate views & ideas.
South Coast Power gave us £350,000 for phase 1 (the ground floor) and the Community Fund gave us £295,000 for phase 2 (the 1st floor). Brighton & Hove City Council, the Learning Partnership and St Nicholas Trust helped us to complete the building, the kitchen and equip it.
What stage are we at? The Community Centre was officially opened in June 2004 by Deputy Mayor Jeane Lepper who said she was amazed and delighted by how well the design blended with the original architecture.
Since the opening the Community Centre has been filling rapidly with activities ranging from playschemes and birthday parties to meetings of local groups, dance/exercise classes, tai chi and jumble sales.
Further fundraising will continue for phase 3, a community cafe within landscaped and wildlife protected grounds with access to Vale Park.
