Do you need advice on disability issues?
The Disability Advice Centre offers information and advice on a range of issues including aids and equipment, access, health, discrimination, employment, leisure, mobility and transport to disabled people, their families or carers and to anyone interested in disability issues.
It is a free, confidential and independent service for people in Brighton and Hove.
The Advice Line is staffed by volunteers, many of whom have experience of disability themselves, and who are very understanding and friendly. They can advise you and give you contact details for organisations which may be able to help you.
The Advice Centre is fully accessible and operates a drop-in facility from 10am-4pm Monday to Friday. It also offers appointments at the office for benefits checks or help with benefits form-filling with an experienced welfare benefits advisor.

And everyone in Portslade (including your parents) can join us at 3pm to see just what you’ve been up to!CAPS - the Community Association of Portslade South is holding an Open Space style event where young people set the agenda. We’ve got workshops on media, drama, DJ/MC’ing, cooking... all leading towards a performance/product at the end. CAPS wants young people to feel they have increased ownership/use of the community centre, where they get involved in organising the local (doesn't have to be in the community centre) activities they want to take part in. We’re getting help to facilitate different groups/workshops.
Portslade Proud as ‘Our Bob’ is made Mayor of the City
On 12th May, local Councillor Bob Carden, who has represented our North Portslade ward for the last 15 years was sworn in as the new mayor of the City of Brighton & Hove & Portslade. The council chamber was full with many of the invited guests coming from the Portslade community to witness this special occasion. Merle, Bob’s wife and also the new Mayoress who originally came from Brighton is also well known to our local community.
Bob, himself the son of a former Portslade councillor, is a life long resident of Portslade and was born in George Street in April 1938. He attended St. Peters school and St. Andrews, later to become Benfield and then Brighton Secondary Tech.
After the war Bob moved with his family to Valley Road, which at that time was called Drove Gardens. He then worked locally at Kearny & Trecker CVA and finished working in the village at Le Carbone for 15 years as a QA engineer.
Bob and Merle met at the Swiss Cottage in Shoreham and were married in October 1963. They have lived all their married life in Portslade, first in Heathfield Drive and latterly in Oakdene Crescent. They have a daughter Julie and a granddaughter Georgia.
Merle worked for the school meals service finally as manager of the central Kitchen at Mile Oak School before being a partner in Smiley’s Café in Victoria Road.
Many Portslade residents will be familiar with Bob’s voice (or his e mails) on the local radio, whether it is about a local issue or the local wildlife which is dear to his heart he is always there to ensure that Portslade gets a mention. He is a governor of several Portslade schools, PCC, Peter Gladwin and more recently, Benfield.
Our Bob is of course a great supporter of community events and has a very long and continuing interest in the Mile Oak Football Club and the Windlesham Day Centre for older people.
He has also actively participated in the Portslade Festival with his talks on the local badgers and leading walks up the downs to see the local deer and other wildlife. He has also served the community and been on the management committee of the Portslade Community Project since it was first set up locally in 1996. Recently, a block of flats in Chalky Road has been called Carden Court in recognition of his continuing interest in local life.
We wish both Bob and Merle every success for the forthcoming year and we know that they will be an excellent Mayor and Mayoress.
Association of Harbour Communities
The Association of Harbour Communities held it’s AGM on the 23rd May. This is an association of people representing groups and residents in the Portslade, West Hove, Fishergate, Southwick and Shoreham areas,
Who have an interest in the port and harbour of Shoreham.
It meets regularly with the Chief Executive and others to discuss points of interest, currently the ports plans for the Lady Bee Marina, the Mott- Mcdonald (consultants) report on transport and road access.
Once again it is recommended that access should be gained via Church Road Portslade.
The present views of the association are that any access should be through a tunnel no matter how expensive.
