BABY SINGING AND SIGNING IS MAGICAL AND REWARDING
My daughter Olivia first signed to me when she was 7 months She signed “milk. She was starting to communicate her everyday needs without the need to cry”. I was stunned being an older mum I had been skeptical but it sounded like fun and it was a great way to meet other mums.
I started practicing with Olivia at about 6 months. At first I thought she’s not paying any attention. However I persevered and signed and spoke the words each time I introduced either some food or milk. Gradually I introduced more signs and after a while she began signing thick and fast. “Cat”, “Dog”, “ Bird”, “Change”, “Where”, to name but a few. The most recent is “open”, “open the door”, “open the window” and she has even told us when the stair gate is open and should be closed. Hard to imagine I know but true. I love her sign for more and I am especially proud when she signs “daddy”.
Olivia is my fourth daughter and she is now 1 year old and signs about 25 signs. I wanted to teach her baby signing after an article I had read. I love signing and the rewards are magical. I am glad that I spent time learning to communicate with her through signing and I am confident that over the years even when she can speak we will still share signs like when I say goodbye to her at the school gate we will sign “I Love You”. I enjoy signing so much that I decided to train as a TinyTalk teacher, so that all parents could benefit from this amazing form of communication.
