What is the Expert Patients Programme?
The Expert Patients Programme (EPP) is a NHS-based training programme that provides opportunities for people who live with a long-term condition(s) to develop new life-skills, ultimately allowing them to self-manage their condition more effectively on a day-to-day basis. Fundamental changes are taking place to empower patients, to recognise that patients and professionals each have their own area of knowledge and expertise and need to work together. There is increasing evidence that patients - with proper support - can take a lead in 'self managing' their conditions and lead a better quality of life more generally. Self-management is seen as an integral, even central, part of the system of care provided to people with chronic conditions. The Expert Patient Programme is not simply about educating patients about their condition or providing them with relevant information, these programmes are based on developing patients' confidence and motivation to use their own skills, information and professional services to take effective control over life with a chronic condition.
