Local Nature Reserve
In 1992 most of the sea side of Shoreham Beach (ie the beach proper running west from the Old Fort) was designated a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI). It contains shingle flora which can withstand harsh conditions. The interest of the site was emphasised by the formation, in 1997, of the Shoreham Beach Conservation Liaison Group &, in 1998, by a survey conducted by Dolphin Ecological Surveys.
The Rio de Janeiro Convention on Biological Diversity, agreed 1992, made peoples & their governments more aware of ecology. The UK Biodiversity Strategy & Action plan appeared in 1994 & the Vegetated Shingle Habitat Action Plan in 1999. That year also saw English Nature launch its West Sussex Shingle Action Project.
June 2006. The local press reports that Shoreham Beach has been declared a Local Nature Reserve & that Adur will be inviting representatives from organisations & individuals to serve on the Reserve's management committee. There is a link to Adur DC on our Links page.
