LET THEM EAT CAKE!!

Club members are always on the look-out for 'new' ideas to support their fund-raising efforts to aid local charities. They have recently added, what is proving a very successful 'recipe' to their repertoire!! It is selling iced and 'plain' fruit Christmas cakes.

In fact, the idea is not new new since a Worthing Lions Club member when visiting Australia discovered that local Lions clubs were being hugely successful in selling cakes to aid their own fund-raising efforts at Christmas time. Unaware of a similar scheme in the UK, samples were obtained for a tasting session which created a lot of interest among Lions Club in S.E.England and like the old saying goes "the proof of the pudding.." but in this case, cake, the idea grew and grew.

An article in 'Bakers Review' a trade journal for the baking industry, ran an article on the project which led us on to an award-winning high-quality bakery lin Lincolnshire. Discussions with the owners resulted in four different types of cake being produced based on an exclusive recipe unique to British Lions Club. (Crumbs!!)

Product & Bakery Details

Jonathan Battersby, located near Lincoln is a young baker who started his cottage industry business six years ago, aiming for a top quality range of products. Since then he has won a Lloyds Bank 'Specialist Business Award' in 1995 and a Silver Medal at the 1998 International Food Exhibition at Earls Court, London for his rich fruit cake.

Rich, rum flavoured fruitcake, free of artificial colouring and additives, also GM free, with a twelve-month shelf life, is available in four styles. The best quality fruits possible are used, all cakes being hand finished and hand wrapped as part of the quality check or as Jonathan says "Made as you would make them at home".

The cakes are very reasonably priced, currently (excuse the pun) plain cakes are sold at £4 each whilst the iced ones sell at £4.50 - free tastings are available so where you see the Haywards Heath Lions Club cake stall - try before you buy. They are so yummy - go on blow the diet!! Look out for cake-selling stalls at various Christmas Shopping Nights in the Haywards Heath/Lindfield area during December 2003. There is always January to get back into shape!
