April 2012 -. rhubarb rhubarb, and a few other edibles...
 | Next open day is planned for Saturday May 19th from 11 to 2pm. Everyone welcome, there will be a few refeshments and you can also bring your own picnic! If you like mint and strawberries, you can pot up some seedlings for free (small donations always welcome).
If anyone would like to come and help at any time, please phone me on 430372 or 079888 64957. You will be rewarded with some lovely produce!
The North Portslade Community Allotment has been going for quite a few years. We are a constituted community group and meet regularly on our plot in Mile Oak.
We are happy to welcome new members, especially those with children - but every age is very welcome! So if anyone out there fancies digging, sowing vegetables with a prospect to eating them, finding sloworms and other interesting creatures and learning about nature and what fun it is to get your hands dirty and have a picnic in the sun, do come and join us.
You can often find us at the plot Saturday mornings from 12:15 and me personally on Mondays from about 10:30am until 2, depending on the weather and sometimes Wednesday mornings as well and Friday at 12, but I do have other jobs, too. Best phone first. Please email saskiaww@uku.co.uk for details, tel 430372. |

OPEN DAY - so many people came
We are happy to report that the Community Allotment has received funding from the Can Do Health The Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, And a Sport Relief Community Cash Grant So - we have built a polytunnel! We had a barn raising event on Saturday June 12th and Sunday June 13th - except it wasn't a barn, it was the polytunnel. 2 days of work and picnic and great achievement and we had lots of helpers and lots of people to join the fun. Free refreshments! It was a lovely two days and I would like to thank everyone who came and worked, chatted, enjoyed the refreshments, praised and encouraged us - you were great!
The picture was taken November 1st, when lots of plants were growing in the warm and sheltered environment, while outside it was getting cold. We had an infestation of caterpillars in the tunnel but with a lot of chopping and soapy water, we got rid of them and all plants regrew. We ate green things all winter! | |

Cuppa Tea at the Allotment
 | We don't just work, we bring a picnic, sit down and chat. The allotment is such a good place to go and forget your stress, just breathe and commune with nature. The children love it there, they always find somewhere to dig, berries to eat and friends to play with, even if some of them are worms and beetles. Why not come and see if you'd like to join us. (The drawing was made by Saskia)
How and when to find us: We are allotment number 57 at the Mile Oak allotments - just follow the path between Overdown Rise and Gorse Close in Portslade. Once in take the road to the right and look out for the willow dome (see drawing above, except it is seen from the other side) just past the turn off to the left. Call Saskia if you want to visit.
Join us for a fun Olympic BBQ at the plot - July 28th, time tbc. |
