MAP
Mycobacterium avium ( from the bird ) sub species Paratuberculosis.
MAP first came into the United Kingdom in about 1894, in a German cow, and it took till around 1934 for Dr Crohn to understand this horrific illness.
MAP is a zoonotic disease which means it can transfer from animal to human. MAP developes in the cow's intestine to infect it's gut and the milk it supplies. MAP will also infect the unborn calf by transfer up the unbilical cord. In animals this disease is called Johne's Disease, in humans itis called Crohn's Disease. MAP causes the same ill effects to the cow as it does to humans and other animals. Swollen, inflamed and infected intestines and digestive tract, causing severe diarrhoea, bleeding and in some cases ulcers. This then causes extremely painful joints and in a lot of cases a wasting away senario, where the animal or human looses a lot of weight, and becomes exhausted and in extreme pain. Most humans suffer with extreme stomach cramps and women tell me this is worse than child birth pains at times.
MAP when deposited on the pasture will survive in each animal's faeces for up to a year, so it is an ongoing problem and the MAP can reinfect new cattle or other animals who use this same pasturein the future. MAP then goes on to infect other cows in the herd as well as other wildlife, such as goats and free roaming deer. When it rains or floods MAP gets washed into nearby rivers, streams and other water sources. This is where MAP then ends up in our drinking water supplies as filtration does not kill MAP from the TAP.
MAP when it has entered the human body hides in the white cells and is extremely hard at present to detect. It can take up to 2 years for Crohns to fully develope within a human being. It is not even seen by a microscope.
The absolute minimum time for an initial culture for MAP in special media, and in the hands of an experienced MAP scientist, to give a PCR test on the centrifuged culture a chance of working would be 3-6 months. The PCR test would need to use ribolysation for optimum release of MAP DNA and be nested using the primers we described in Bull et al J Clin Microbiol 2003.

Can MAP Cause Ulcerated Colitis, As It Does Crohns ?
Pure Ulcerated Colitis is a different disease from true Crohns Disease....diff epidemiol, different pathol, diff clinical picture good evidence for autoimmunity in UC not there in CD. UC is triggered by a microorganism I'm pretty sure....and I would'nt be surprised if it also had an animal origin. But if you've got a sore colon from UC and are susceptible you can easily get a MAP infection on top of UC....giving rise to the 'Indeterminate colitis' picture. Also....local 'UC' like left-sided colitis can be caused by MAP and I have seen UC respond dramatically to anti-MAP treatment.

MAP is found in all the infected cow's milk, and we know the normal temperature of pasteurisation, where the milk is heated to 72 degrees for 21 seconds, it does not destroy MAP. Pasteurised milk needs to be boiled, as does the water you drink, to destroy this MAP bacteria. MAP has even been found in UHT milk, even though UHT is heated to even higher temperatures, the MAP clusters into lumps, and because of the way UHT is produced MAP can survive in these lumps. It is like putting a chicken in a microwave and expecting it to cook right through. MAP can also be passed on by the infected animals being put into the human food chain. Please cook your meats well, do not eat rare cooked. The government announced that pasteurised milk was going to be tested for MAP, across the Country on 11th August 1998.
Some of you may remember the news that supermarkets announced pasteurised milk was going to be heated for longer than 15 seconds, up to 21 seconds.
I personally took part in the the Government's consultation into MAP / Johne's Disease / Crohn's Disease in August 2002 after contacting the then Prime Minister- Tony Blair. It took DEFRA, the government's department for environment, fisheries, and rural affairs, their department Endemic Diseases & Zoonoses, just over 2 years to complete and on September 20th 2004 a draft guidance on MAP was issued to farmers, launched at a cattle convention in Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire. The Defra conclusion still did not draw any positive final conclusions and it is still like this today in July 2008. Defra " came to the fence, but would not open the gate. "
MAP is out there, and getting stronger, it is in your raw and pasteurised milk and water supplies, often in your meats. Why is it not really being taken seriously ?
Here in the UK as in the USA there is a huge consortium of dairy industry which put pressure on keeping this from the public. The large drug companies are not going to help as Crohns sufferers and those with other IBDs & IBS bring in huge revenues from the sale of their drugs to the health service for sufferers treatments.
MAP can kill you, despite what some say, often after a Crohns sufferer has gone through all the toxic chemicals available, then the raft of surgeries, again for the profit of a few, the MAP has little else to destroy in the body except the Crohns sufferer.
This campaign ( TCCC.UK ) has heard from relatives, many really sad stories of loved ones lost to this illness. The rate amoungst children contracting Crohns rises every year. 12000 cases of Crohns diagnosed every year across all ages. Around about 300.000 Crohns sufferers here in the UK now alone, millions across the World. Everyone now knows someone who has this illness, some unfortunately know a whole lot more.
Prof John Hermon Taylor, now at Kings College Hospital, London, has developed an Anti - MAP vaccine, a DNA Crohns Vaccine, over the last 6 & 1/2 years at a cost of £ 650.000.
Can you help us get this new anti-MAP vaccine through it's human trials ? We really need your help now financially in 2010.
