Wadhurst Area N.W or Sussex Police General Safety Advice.

Cold Callers To Your Door

My advice to any of you who get a " cold caller " to your door, someone you do not know, who may call day or at night time, claiming to be from an Authority, such as County Council, District Council, Police & (CID), Waterboard, Gas or Electricity Supplier, NEVER open the door & let them in. ALWAYS ask to see their Identification Card or in case of the Police, their Warrant Card. This can be passed through the letterbox to you. Take their details, and phone the Authority they are claiming to be from, to see if their representatives should be calling on you in the first place.

If an Antique Dealer ( Knocker Boy ), calls at your home, NEVER let him in to value anything, especially if you are on your own, get his details and call the Police. If you have things of value, take them to a good Auction House (ie. in Battle or Lewes ) or Sotherbys or Christies in London, to get the items true valuation, or to the BBC Antiques Roadshow, if they are in town, as their representatives are all vetted and belong to BADA, and are from Sotherbys or Christies or the V&A - Victoria & Albert Museum. At the very least these people belong to BADA - British Antique Dealer's Association.

If a Charity Collector, Domestic Fuel Supplier ( Electric or Gas ) Representative, Phone Company Representative, Double Glazing Representative, etc calls at your home, Again Never open the door to these people, and let them in, ALWAYS get their identity card, if they have one, take their details of who they are claiming to represent, you can phone the Charity / Company there & then, that they are claiming to represent, check with the Charity / Company to see if they should be calling on you, and if you have any doubt or suspicions, call the Police. ALSO most important, NEVER fill in any forms on your doorstep that may be given to you by these collectors / representatives. Often these forms ask for personal & banking details, especialy if asking for Direct Debit. Never disclose any of your personal information to these cold callers. All these details can fall into criminal hands. A completed form can be returned directly by post to the registered address of the recognised Charity / Company concerned.

In general, regarding " cold callers "Never disclose how many people live in the house, where they are, when or if they are due home, or if you are going on holiday. Never give personal or banking or credit card, email address or phone number details. The least they know about you or your family the better.

" Hello & Good day & Goodbye " is all you need say through the door, if you wish to be polite.

The Police are happy to check out these " cold callers " and would rather do this, than have a criminal incident.

House, Door or Vehicle Keys

House, Door or Vehicle Keys.

Please NEVER leave your vehicle or door keys on view at home, in your door or in your vehicle. Never keep vehicle keys & house keys on the same keyring, ALWAYS keep seperate, and away from open windows or doors.

Keep laptops, sat navs, mobile phones and other electronic items out of sight, Please do not leave these items in your vehicles overnight or while your vehicle is unattended, especially on view.

At night or on leaving the vehicle unattended, ALWAYS make sure your vehicle's doors & windows are locked shut and vehicle alarm set.

Let me bring your attention to ‘A New Keyholder Register’ which has been about before. It is Peace for a Pound. Go onto the website www.peaceforapound.com and you can register your property or business for £12 a year and they will contact keyholders or nominated persons if there is a problem with your property / alarms etc.

Garages, Outbuildings & Sheds.

Garages, Outbuildings & Sheds.

PLEASE, if just nipping out for a moment, for the day, or going on holiday, Please make sure that your garages, outbuildings or sheds are all well locked up. Fit an alarm, if the building is not part of your home alarm security, as this will alert the neighbours, if you are not there. Make sure all your ladders & tools are locked away, not left laying around the garden, as these will be used to break into your home or a neighbours home.

PLEASE, if you see any suspicious vehicles, cars, vans or trucks parked near to anyone's property that you are not happy with, day or night, that may have occupants watching the movements of the owners of the property, or just watching the property. PLEASE take the registration number, colour, description, make of vehicle, if it has occupants and their descriptions if possible.

PLEASE call the Police immediately on :

0845 60 70 999 or in emergency 999.

PLEASE do not leave your curtains wide open with the lights on, especially in the winter months, dark early evenings, keep your curtains & windows shut and your doors locked. If you go out, leave a light & radio on at the very least. PLEASE make sure ALL your doors & windows to your home & all your buildings are well shut & locked before going to bed.

See ANYTHING suspicious, PLEASE Call the Police immediately, on 0845 60 70 999 or in emergency, 999 THANKYOU.

General Advice

GENERAL ADVICE.

Please be aware that when you are selling items and giving home addresses or post codes to unknown persons – they may well be preparing to steal that property by tracking your address down. A suggestion is that you make it clear to the potential buyer that the items are not kept at your address but that you will bring them round when an appointment is made. If necessary store your items at a friend’s house.

Several members of the community have reported receiving telephone calls from someone purporting to be a member of a road traffic accident department and advising them that they had some money awaiting them as one of their family had been involved in a road traffic accident. The caller will then try to obtain bank details to pay the money in – don’t be fooled!

Going On Holiday - Planning.

Going On Holiday - Planning.

If you are off on holiday, PLEASE advise your N.W road co-ordinator, or a close neighbour, you know & trust, that you are going away for a period of time and when you plan to return, and if possible leave with them a contact phone number for you, or a relative's phone number, that can be contacted in the event of crime or fire. PLEASE also ask the neighbour to keep an eye out for unexpected parcels, and to remove any mail, or household flyers from you letterbox or front door areas. THANK YOU..

Scams, Scams, & More Scams .

Scams, Scams & More Scams

Scams come to you in many ways, through your letterbox, through emails & down the phoneline or mobile phone.

Letterbox Scams

These come in mailings telling you " you have won £ thousands of pounds " or another prize, via junk mail or mailsort, and to complete & return the enclosed form straight away, sometimes with a small handling fee. Why the handling fee, if you have won all this money ? PLEASE bin this sort of mailing, NEVER send any money, especially a cheque with all your banking details on it & your signature to these SCAMMERS.

Email Scams

These type of Scams come, pretending to be from BT, Lloyds Bank, National Westminster Bank, HSBC Bank, Abby National or Halifax or many of the main banking institutions, using the company logos at the head of the email, and then we have the Inland Revenue emails, again with appropriate logos, telling you that you have a sum of money as a tax return, all telling you to return the email with your personal details, but under all this is the fact these scammers are after your name, address, date of birth and lots more personal information that they can use to scam you of your money or financial assets.

Scam Phonecalls

These are cold calling scammers pretending to be a company, selling you a bogus product, or you have won a prize or money, and are really after your Bank details or Credit Card details. Never pass your Banking or credit card details to these scam callers.

There is only one registered company with SKY TV to service or repair your SKY TV digital boxes, and that is Domestic & General, Do NOT be fooled by a company calling themselves Sky Repair or simular.

With ALL Charity or Business ( Insurance ) forms ALWAYS return them by post to the offical known registered address at their headquarters. If it is a genuine Charity or Company they will ALWAYS mail you by post the correct forms to complete & return.
