Rowing Books, Magazines, DVDs ....

There is a wealth of published information about rowing in the form of books, magazines, DVDs and web sites - the main problem is knowing where to find it. The following notes provide some of the answers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
British Rowing Almanack
Usually referred to as "The Almanack" this is the rowing persons bible. Published annually it is a mine of information on British rowing. Contains details of club racing records and regatta results from the previous season, names and addresses of officials, Rules of Racing, Regatta Calendar, Tide Tables, Water Safety Code, adverts for regattas and equipment suppliers and much more. An indispensable source of information and enlightenment.
This, the oldest sporting handbook was founded in 1860. The present Editor, the indefatigable Keith Osborne of Royal Chester Rowing Club, has carried out his honorary duties for over 40 years.
For an order form and details of discounts see ad in Regatta magazine. If you pay your ARA membership by Direct Debit you can add on an order and payment for your Almanack which will then be sent to you on publication.
ROWING &Regatta
The official magazine of the Amateur Rowing Association. Mailed direct to members of the Association as part of their membership package. News, racing results, comment, photos, adverts, training articles, cartoons etc.
Indoor Rowing Training Guide - Version 2
Available on the Concept2 web site and written by a wealth of international contributors this second version is I believe also available in printed format but it is really aimed at those who wish to refer to it on the Internet or to download it (it is in PDF format) from the Concept2 web site.
The training schedules assume that rowers will be using a heart rate monitor.
A comprehensive guide to the use of ergos it also includes suggested stretching routines.
A very useful publication particularly for coaches and home users. An instructional technique video is also available.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Heart Rate Monitor Book

by Sally Edwards - a USA book. I got my copy at the National Championships Roadshow a while ago but it should be available by mail order from advertisers in Regatta.

A5 softback, 140 pages, illustrated.

Describes the effects of training at specific heart rates. Emphasises the need to monitor heart rate not only accurately but also constantly to obtain full benefit of training effort.

Useful as a companion to the Indoor Rowing Guide.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Art of Sculling
By multi US rowing medal winner Joe Padua - this is another USA book.
Softback, 150 pages, illustrated.
Stockists include the Richard Way bookshop in Friday Street, Henley in person or by mail order (see advert in Almanack).
As many club scullers are self taught this book will provide much useful guidance. Includes both recreational and competitive sculling.
"Here is an excellent book for anyone looking to improve their skill" - Brad Lewis, US Olympic Rowing Gold Medallist.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

High Performance Rowing

The author, John McArthur, holds the ARA Gold Coaching Award, an MSc in Sports Science and is a former GB Lightweight Men's Team Coach.

His book is written for coaches and crews involved in competitive rowing. It concentrates on elements of how to make your boat go faster and provides a guide to training on land and water and the techniques needed for improving performance at the various levels of competition.

Do not be put off by the implication in the title that this book is only for those at the "top end of the sport" - it is a book for all who aspire to succeed irrespective of their present skill levels.

Softback, 156 pages, numerous photos, diagrams and charts. Available from specialist rowing booksellers, on line booksellers etc.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Go Faster with Foster (DVD)
Everything you need to know about rowing in one DVD. Go Faster with Foster is the complete rowing "how to" guide with instruction on technique, diet, fitness, training, coaching, racing and safety.
Whether you want to row competitively, to keep fit or simply row for fun, you will find the techniques and tips contained in this DVD invaluable for enhancing your appreciation and understanding of the sport of rowing.
If you want to learn the techniques that Tim Foster and his crewmates used to win their gold medals this DVD is a must. The ARA are to be congratulated for producing such a valuable and relevant resource.
Available from the Amateur Rowing Association as part of the "Go Race" package. Also available on Video - but go for the DVD if you can as it is menu driven and you can hop from section to section more easily.See the ARA web site for further details.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Amateur Rowing Association Shop

The ARA mail order shop can be accessed via the Association's web site (see our links page for easy access). On their menu go to Membership and then Merchandise.

In addition to their own material such as The British Rowing Almanack, The Towing of Boat Trailers and Good practice in Rowing (Child Protection Procedures) , the ARA also stock and sell publications by The National Coaching Foundation and books on Sports Psychology, Treatment of Injuries and many other rowing related subjects.

Steven Redgrave's Complete Book of Rowing

First published in 1992 and since updated..

Hardback, 300 pages, photos, drawings, charts.

Recent editions have I believe been updated so the rigging tables should now relate to cleavers.

A large section is devoted to analysis and correction of faults in technique.

One of the few sources of practical advice on steering and coxing.

This book will have widespread appeal from beginners seeking answers to the most bebadged coaches whose knowledge may just have a few gaps yet to be filled.

May now be somewhat hard to find new - you may have to trawl the secondhand booksellers such as Richard Way in Friday Street, Henley-on-Thames.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Four Men in a Boat
The life and times of the Sydney 2000 Olympic gold medal coxless four written by Rory Ross with Tim Foster.
The book is structured around the Olympic final itself with Tim Foster analysing the strory of the crew as they progress towards the gold medal.
A vivid account of what it was like to be a part of a world class crew comprising four headstrong and at times conflicting personalities and how at times illness, injury and internal conflict threatened to tear the crew apart as the Games approached......
And you thought your club crew had problems......
Hardback, 200 pages, colour photos.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Lifetime in a Race

The third member of the Sydney gold medal four to retire and go into print Matthew Pinsent gives his take on rowing at the highest level.

He interweaves the build up to Athens 2004 with the story of his career and his partnership with Steve Redgrave. An account of determination, pain, doubt and failure, relationships and rivalries, triumph and fame.

If you did not join him in his tears on the medal rostrum you will better understand those of us who did when you have read this book.

Nevertheless he remains a very private man - and his book is an interesting contrast to that of his crewmate Tim Foster.

Hardback, 323pages, colour photos.

Rowing Information on the Internet

The Internet is a huge resource for information on the sport of rowing and if just browsing in general the best way to find it is via one of the search engines such as Google.

Many rowers have sites to which they refer on a regular basis and the easiest way to access these sites is to store them in your Favourites register.

Buying new rowing books can be expensive - ebay and online secondhand bookshops such a ABE books a useful alternative.

You will find on our Links page links to some of the most popular sites.

Suggestions for additional links are invited.
