At the end of 2007 the society's name was changed to "The Bristol Fuchsia and Geranium Society. The original Bristol and District Fuchsia Society was founded in 1980. The Society was formed to to encourage, improve and extend the cultivation of Fuchsias in all possible ways; to hold meetings, give instructional talks and demonstrations, to hold shows and exhibitions.
In the last five years the interest of the society has been widened to include Pelargoniums (Geraniums) and the Society is affiliated to both the British Fuchsia Society (BFS) and The British and European Geranium Society (BEGS).
The Society meets on the last Friday of every month, except December, at St Luke's Church Hall, Glenarm Walk, Brislington, Bristol at 7:30 p.m. We have various invited speakers covering Fuchsias, Pelargoniums, general horticulture and items of local interest.
We also hold instructional evenings and "at home with" events, which are held at a members house.
We also hold two shows per year and this year we will have our fourth open Pelargonium Show and our thirty-first annual Fuchsia Show.We have a mixture of different members, some who are just interested in growing fuchsias in their gardens, some for the social side, and some who are more dedicated show people. We are lucky enough to have a number of members who exhibit at a national standard, both in Fuchsias and Pelargoniums. A few of our number are also qualified as national judges for Fuchsias or Pelargoniums (or both!!)
We are also very honoured to have the last President of the BFS, Barrie Nash, among our members.
With this wealth of experience, if you are growing Fuchsias or Pelargoniums, or you have some problems with these plants, we will be able to help you, or put you in contact with someone who can.
