Dave Hooper Sensei

The Plymouth dojo (DSKC) once again hosted the annual course with Dave Hooper sensei, and once again the students had the benefit of a world class Instructor who lives and trains with the top JKA instructors, thinks and has all the JKA qualities but with the benefit of being able to explain in English the required detail and finer points that usually get missed or miss understood.
Sensei maintained his characteristic approach to karate, one of “if you thoroughly understand basics and concentrate on correct form and movement, then speed and ability should follow naturally”.
We also covered some of the small changes to Kata Bassai Dai and Kanku Sho.
He emphasised that we should not get too hung up on “changes to kata”, but to keep an open mind.  However, all kata have main points and techniques that have to be performed technically correctly, with the right attitude etc etc, this is fundamental to demonstrate understanding and ability. We look forward to the next visit.

Owen Murray sensei

Members of the DSKC travelled to Wiltshire for a course with Owen Murray sensei.

Sensei Murray has the experience of world class competitive Karate coupled with the traditional values that we have all grown up with, this makes him a formidable exponent and a knowledgeable Karate – ka, ideal for the FBSKU(I) squad members.

These qualities were ably demonstrated throughout the day when more than one of the assembled class felt the power of his fast attack and defence techniques.

The session was delivered in a very relaxed manner and yet maintained the discipline and focus required in order to “up the tempo”, maintain pressure and yet control the techniques.

An excellent day was had by all and arguably, everyone learn’t something.
