New Years Honours Award

The Musical Director Peter Skellon & Members of the RAFA Band feel very honoured to receive The National Presidents Certificate in the New Years Honours List. This is a tremendous start to 2008.

Anniversary Reception Friday 22 February 2008

The RAFA Band held a Concert & Reception in the Blakehay Theatre to celebrate the following Anniversaries.The RAF's 90th, The RAFA's 65th & the 10th Anniversary of the RAFA Concert Band.

RAFA Area General Meeting Telford Sunday 16 March

The Band were up bright & early for a 2 hour coach trip to Telford to perform a lunchtime Concert for the Delegates to close the RAFA AGM weekend.This was followed by a Sunday Lunch.

One of the Highlights of the Concert was the Trombone solo "The Acrobat" played by Peter who managed to have the audience in fits of laughter with his antics on the trombone.

The Concert featured the Stagecoach Children's Theatre Group, held in the Blakehay Theatre.

RAFA Concert at Trowbridge Saturday 12 April

The Band performed a Concert for RAFA in Trowbridge. The audience enjoyed a varied programme of music.

RAFA Concert Shirley Solihull Saturday 10 May

After a 2 hour coach journey we arrived at Shirley. A short rehearsal for the Band after which they enjoyed a Buffet tea.

This was the second Concert for the Band in Solihull.

New Years Honours Award

Peter & Steve received the RAFA National Presidents Certificate at the RAFA National Conference in Blackpool. This was awarded to the RAFA Band in the New Years Honours List.

Concert for the Air Training Corps Saturday 14 June

A Concert was held in the Blakehay Theatre in support of the Air Training Corps ( ATC ) in Weston-Super-Mare.The Cadets gave a fine drill display which developed into a dance this entertained the Audience.

Veteran's Concert Plymouth Saturday 28 June

The Band played to a near capacity audience in St Andrew's Church. Among the guests were the Deputy Mayor of Plymouth and the RAFA Area President AVM Pat O'Reilly.

Some of the Musicians from the RAFA Band go up in the world to view the Floral Display honouring their 10th Anniversary year.The Mayor & Mayoress and North Somerset Chairman also attended to add support to this special event.

Opening of Worlebury Glade Saturday 19 July

The Residents Association asked the Band to play for the opening of The Worlebury Glade.At the ceremony a carving of an owl was unveiled & some local children entertained friends & family.

Service - Grand Pier Saturday 16 August

An Ensemble from the Band accompanied the Hymns for the Service held on the Grand Pier, Weston-Super-Mare. Despite the early morning start (8.30 am) & bad weather a number of local digniteries & visitors attended.

Grand Pier / Red Arrows Display Wednesday 27 August

On a overcast day the Band played on The Grand Pier to support the build up for the Red Arrows. We played from 12pm to 6pm entertaining the thousands who were waiting to see the Display.

One of the Red Arrows Team- call sign Red 10 has a lesson on the Clarinet by Corriene & Sarah musicians from the Band.

The Grand Pier Song

The Band played an arrangement by Stephen Rocky of The Grand Pier Song, composed in 1929 for The Weston-Super-Mare Pier. Stephen who plays trombone with the Band presented a Souvenier Copy of the Score to Michelle Michael one of the owners of The Grand Pier.

10th Anniversary Concert/Reception Friday 12 September

The Band gave a Concert to over 100 invited guests and friends in the Helicopter Museum at Locking. Attending were the Mayor & Mayoress Cllr Andrew Horler & North Somerset Chairman Ian Porter.

18 Mayor & Mayoress came from surrounding areas also The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, along with Dignitaries from the RAF Association.

After the Concert Friends & Guests enjoyed a Reception & a tour of the Helicopter Museum.


This event coincided with the release of the Band's first CD.

Grand Concert in the Blakehay Saturday 13 September

The Band were on top form once again at the Concert to celebrate their 10th Anniversary.
Featured in the programe were the Wyvern Community School Singing Group who proved to be very popular with the Audience.

Musical Director Peter Skellon & his wife Pauline were surprised at the end of the Concert with a special presentation by Sqn Ldr Duncan Stubbs Director of Music RAF Central Band who almost did a This is Your Life on them.

Among the presentations were a floral display,an engraved vase, a signed picture of the RAF Massed Bands & a scrapbook of many past events collated by their daughter Corriene.

Weston-Super-Mare are to have the RAFA Concert Band based in their Town.

Grove Park Bandstand Sunday 14 September

The Band performed in the park for the last Bandstand of the year. The weather was kinder to us this time & many people sat and enjoyed the music.The Mayor & Mayoress came to show their support at the end of our 10th Anniversary weekend.

SSAFA Concert Saturday 11 Oct

This Concert was arranged in the Blakehay Theatre to raise funds for the Soldiers, Sailors & Airmens Families Association Force Help.
Supporting the Band were the Stagecoach Theatre Group.

Hutton Village Monday 13 October

An ensemble from the Band entertained 90 members of the Hutton Friendship Club in their Village Hall.

HMS Somerset Wednesday 29 October

A few Musicians accompanied the Hymns for the Service to launch the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Rotary Christmas Charity Fayre Sat 22 November

Once again the Band were asked to perform at the Rotary Christmas Charity Fayre in the Winter Gardens.The weather was kind as the Band played carols outside to advertise the event.

Royal Visitor to the Grand Pier Friday 5 December

HRH Princess Royal visited the Grand Pier in Weston-Super-Mare. The Band were asked to play for this visit.

Christmas Social & Concert Sat/Sun 6/7 December

On Saturday we held a Christmas Draw & Buffet for members of the Band.Sunday afternoon a Christmas in the Air Concert was held in the Blakehay Theatre to capacity Audience.Appearing with the Band were the Stagecoach Children's Theatre Group.

Carols by Candlelight Thursday 11 December

An ensemble from the Band played for Carols by Candlelight at a local school.

Carols in Knightstone House Monday 15 December

The residents enjoyed a Carol Concert given by members of the RAFA Band.

An ensemble from the Band entertained the children & staff with Carols & some seasonal songs.
