The Parish
Back in 1086, the manor of Stockland was held by Ralph de Reuilly and then subsequently descended, with East Quantoxhead, to Maurice de Gaunt who left it in his will to the hospital of St Mark at Bristol (d. 1230). Although there were a number of ownership claims made upon the manor by Maurice’s heir and successive family members, the hospital remained in possession of the manor until its dissolution in 1541. It was during the 13th century that the parish became known as Stockland Gaunts.
In 1541 the King granted Stockland manor to the Mayor and commonalty of Bristol. The manor remained in the ownership of Bristol corporation, from which it derived its alternative name of Stockland Bristol, until 1839 when it was sold to Thomas Daniel. The manor was then passed from father to son until Henry Cave Daniel, who dismembered the manor, selling mainly to the tenants, in 1947 and 1952.
