Kit for Sierra Leone
The kit that the South West Branch Branch donated has finally found a home and the e-mail received from Stuart Hamilton, our man in Sierra Leone, is attached to let members know the full story.
Andy,
You should by now have some of the photo's from the game between Moyamba Town and the 6th Battalion of the RSLAF (Royal Sierra Leonean Armed Forces) held at the Nepal Peace Stadium on 17/10/04. The game was a 'friendly' as part of our community project work in the area. A hard fought game ended 1-0 to Moyamba Town. They clearly have a link with our friends from Old Trafford here as prior to the game the pitch was 'cut & prepared' by a herd of local goats! The attendance was over 200 and a thumping disco continued throughout to enhance the atmosphere!
I had planned to donate the shirts to an amputee team as you know. However, I found it difficult to find a suitable group in spite of numerous enquiries. Most amputee teams actually play beach soccer in the Freetown area. It is however a sad fact that whilst there can be no doubting their need for strips many of these teams have a habit of selling the donated kits to the highest bidder. Many subsequently reappear on local market stalls, such is the scale of poverty in Sierra Leone and the need for hard cash. With that in mind I found a team In Moyamba who I have been doing some work with and who I can monitor. Needless to say the kit was gratefully received and the players, and indeed many of the townsfolk, have asked me to pass on their thanks to the branch for such a wonderful gesture. I'm confident they will get many seasons of use out of the kit.
I'd appreciate it if you could pass on the thanks of the people of Moyamba, Sierra Leone to the branch members.
Many thanks,
Stuart. | |

Any chance of a penalty, Ref?
| Stuart Hamilton, who took charge of the game, meets the captain of Moyamba Town. I'm not sure of his name but I expect it's Sylvain! | |

The Officials
| Stuart Hamilton, complete with whistle, pencil, cards and, by the look of it, probably handcuffs too pictured with two local linesmen. In the background, Moyamba Town admire their new kit! | |
