Another Successful Meeting
 | There was an very good turn out of Somerset Past and Present Captains’ at Wells Golf Club on Thursday 17th April. It turned out to be a bright and breezy day and there were quite a few shots left out on the course as a result of the wind but there were no complaints as everyone appeared to enjoy this opening event of the Somerset Captains season. Wells Golf Club, home Club of our Captain John Chillington, were the perfect hosts and their Committee and members were thanked for allowing the Captains use of the course to kick-start his year.
After the golf it was time to eat then the Secretary, Brian Reeves, introduced Richard Booth, Host Captain, who tended a belated welcome to the Somerset Captains to Wells Golf Club and hoped that they had all enjoyed their visit. He apologised for the easterly breeze but said he couldn’t do anything about that even though he had tried.
The course was in excellent condition and Richard Booth was asked to convey the appreciation of all the Captains to the Green Staff for the fine work they have done on the course. It was a credit to the Club.
There were also compliments paid to Shaun Palmer, his wife Tess and the smiling Catering Staff for the welcome meal they laid on for each group as they came off the course. The choice of roast beef or/and roast pork was the only decision to be made when you entered the dining room and even then you couldn’t go wrong whichever way you chose. It was first class, well presented and served with a smile. Paul, behind the bar was also thanked for his contribution towards the success of the day.
Meeting and receiving good wishes from so many Captains during the day was a grand start for John Chillington, Somerset Captain of Captains,. It is always a pleasant event with so much camaraderie and good will flowing, in addition to the usual gathering of old friends together with many new friendships being struck up and it is difficult to believe how quickly the time passed by. John then presented a cheque to Richard Booth for Wells Golf Club from the Somerset Golf Captains, in gratitude for hosting this Spring Meeting in 2008.
After the Prizegiving the Somerset Captains President, Charlie Carr, then made mention of the fact that the outgoing Secretary & Treasurer, Trevor Jenkins, was unable to attend the Autumn Meeting through personal circumstances and made a presentation of a Tankard to mark his retirement. An even bigger surprise was in store for Trevor when he was also presented with a beautiful Tantalus and Crystal Whiskey Glasses, paid for by the membership collectively, together with a set of Cuff Links to keep his sleeves out of the soup. He was always a messy eater.
Trevor, in response, welcomed the opportunity he was denied in September of addressing the Captains. The friendships he had enjoyed among so many Captains in the County and the 240 plus new Captains he had welcomed into the Somerset Captains during that time left him with the knowledge that the Somerset Captains had grown substantially in strength, stature and a promising future was ahead.
Trevor thanked all the Captains for their support and words of comfort when he was experiencing the saddest time of his life and for their cooperation and assistance since 1997. Without that support he said he would have been in a terrible state. Trevor was both delighted and surprised by their wonderful gifts and in accepting them said that he would be dedicating the gifts and his years of service to his late wife, Joyce, who was the strength, motivation and driving force behind his success throughout his 11 years in office. He later told the President and Secretary that the excess sum of money donated by the members would be put towards the headstone for Joyce, soon to be placed, as a token of thanks from the Somerset Captains for her contribution and dedication towards the cause.
Alan Hibditch, Dorset Captain, thanked Somerset Captains on behalf of the Guests and the meeting closed with wishes for a safe journey home for everyone.
