Golf on Horseback.... at Cowdray Park

Well its now 9.30 am on Monday 12th May and here we are on our way to Cowdray Park Golf & Country Club to play our annual golf match against Sussex Captains on possibly the warmest day of the year. We have taken the scenic route, Brian and I, passed through many beautiful rustic villages and seen acre upon acre of rape fields in full bloom stretching out as far as the eye could see. What a pleasure it is to be embracing this glorious countryside on such a warm, balmy morning and equally nice is the fact that I am not behind the wheel so I can take it all in.

Now we have arrived at the Clubhouse and with our feet firmly planted back on earth we are faced with the stark reality of facing the mighty Sussex Golf Captains, under orders from their Secretary, Arthur Holder, and well lead by their Captain, on a golf course that has not been visited by any of our Somerset Golf Captains before and trying to redress a competitive record that heavily favours the home side. As we have hinted on many occasions, and we will repeat it time and again until we win, results are not everything, it is the meeting, competing and bleating that really matters.

Having set the scene, there is little more to say except that the form book doesn’t lie….. we did not disappoint you Arthur, Somerset were once again given a lesson from the Sussex Captains, however, the margin of defeat, or victory, depending upon which camp you were from, was a lot closer at 5 games to 3. We have no complaints, only congratulations to the Sussex Captains, our hosts, who looked after us extremely well and a really good time was had by all.

As for the Course and its facilities, well, the expression “first class” springs to mind and don’t let anyone tell you any different, the condition of the course, the food, service, and company could not have been bettered. We thank you Arthur for treating us so well, but then again, you always do and with such aplomb.

A few match reports will follow together with several ad hoc photos that have been produced by Frank Ryan and myself, Trevor Jenkins and if you managed to take a couple of photos then please forward them to me in jpeg format, via email, and I will add them to this site.
