Yet Another HantSome Meeting

Having stayed overnight in Liphook the Somerset Captains moved on to play Hampshire Golf Captains at Petersfield Golf Club on Tuesday 13th May where we were welcomed by Bill Small, Hampshire Captain of Captains and their Captains Secretary, Mike Hughes, the evergreen stalwart behind the scene for Hampshire.

It is always a pleasure meeting up with the likes of Mike, Bill, Jim, Barry, Peter, David, to name but a few, so it was good to see them along with so many other familiar faces among the Hampshire team. Several old friendships were again renewed and many more struck up between the newer Captains among both teams. It is this camaraderie that brings so much entertainment and pleasure to these meetings between the two county Captains Societies, and long may that continue.

This was another sweltering day with very little wind and much welcomed sunshine, mind you, it did take a fair bit out of you during the round so plenty of fluid was the order of the day. The firmness of the fairways and the greens did add those extra yards to all the shots both into and on the greens. There was considerable praise for the condition of the course and the variety of the holes.

After a light lunch it was time to do battle and try to regain the HantSome Trophy from last years winners, Hampshire, but experience dictated that it was never going to be easy for these meeting were always closely contested. After the set-back of defeat at home last year to Hampshire and yesterdays set-back at Sussex we thought the losing speech might be needed again today.

The Course and its facilities were excellent, well presented and the company could not have been bettered. We thank you Hampshire Captains and Brian Burgess, Match Manager, for treating us so well. Please pass on to the Committee and Staff of Petersfield Golf Club our gratitude for hosting this match.

A few match reports will follow together with several ad hoc photos that have been produced by Frank Ryan and myself, Trevor Jenkins and if you managed to take a couple then please forward them to me in jpeg format via email as I am short on photos for this match and I will add them to this site.

The Captain's Party

The Captains Party of John Chillington and Frank Ryan, Somerset, and Bill Small and Joe Selby, Hampshire, were engrossed in a finely poised game with nothing much in it at all so the resultant half was well deserved and set the match off to a fine start.

Match 2

Derek Biggs and Steve Varcoe, Somerset, and Robert Cox and David Newman, Hampshire also had a close game before the home duo took the spoils on the 18th green to win 1 up.

Match 3

Brian Reeves, Secretary, and Colin Davies, Somerset, had a slightly easier passage against Brian Burgess and Roger Deadman of Hampshire, with the former pair keeping on top for most of the round and finally winning by 3 / 2.

Match 4

Barry Butler and Mike Hughes, Secretary, Hampshire, were once again pitted against Trevor Jenkins and Trevor Hicks, Somerset, and nothing changes, “WE HAD YOU BUTLER”. The meetings between these four players is firstly a pleasure then always a fiercely competed round of golf follows. It was no different this year, Trevor J birdied the 1st and Trevor H followed that with a birdie at the 2nd. From there on it was nip and tuck but the visitors eventually won the game 2 & 1.

Match 5

Rob Ford and Paul Binding, Somerset, found the going a bit tough against David Bettles and Ray Barlow, Hampshire, but they stuck to it and closed their match with a 2 & 1 victory.

Match 6

What a game this turned out to be with the home duo of Jim MacDonald and Dave Arnold several holes up on Roy Parmiter and Bill Hawker, Somerset, after nine holes but the visitors hit back strongly on the back nine and justly deserved halving the game.

Match 7

Murray Parsons and Brian Rideout, Somerset, were well matched by Peter Richardson and Robert Gray of Hampshire but it was in later stages of the round that the Somerset duo took the lead and ran out winning 2 & 1.

Match 8

This game between Mile Dawson and Chris Warcup of Somerset and Ivor Bulpitt and John Stroud of Hampshire never looked as if there was going to be anything in it as both pairing were playing excellent golf, however, it was the Somerset duo who just edged the result finishing 1 up.

The 18th Green

Handshakes All Round.

Don't cry Barry..... it is only a game.

The Laid Back Approach

Bill Hawker adopts the over-relaxed mode as Jim MacDonald offers a few words of advice to him.

Taking It Easy

Just a group of the Captains relaxing before they sit down for their evening meal.

Drinks Problem

Derek Biggs asking Steve Varcoe whether half a glass of water is going to be enough for the two of them to drown their sorrows.

The Flag Is Over Here.

Ever wondered why the putts keep missing the hole. Well, facing the wrong way could be one of the reasons as TJ will soon find out.

Life of Brian

The two Brians. Brian Burgess, Match Secrtetary of Hampshire and Brian Reeves, Secretary of Somerset, ponder over the results as they come in.

The Two Captains

John Chillington, Somerset Captain receiving congratulations from Bill Small the Hampshire Captain on winning the HantSome Trophy by 6 games to 2. The trophy was donated jointly by Mike Hughes, Hampshire Secretary and Trevor Jenkins, Somerset Vice-President.
