When They Begin The Benign.
 | The annual challenge match between Burnham & Berrow Captains and Somerset Captains was, thankfully, played in quite benign weather conditions and this diminished much of the home Captain’s advantage to some extent.
Tony Hill was the host Captain of the day and after a light lunch the team pairings were announced and play was soon under way.
|
|
Match 1
 | | This match was keenly contested between Mike Baker, President of Burnham & Berrow, playing with David Jenkins, against John Chillington, Captain of Somerset Captains and Roy Parmiter. After early exchanges of holes it was fitting that the game ended all square. |
|
Match 2
 | | Quite a lesson was handed out to Brian Reeves and Bob Laband, Somerset, by Wesley Wyatt and Paul Hucker, Burnham Captains, who were always well on top and closed the game out on the 12th Green with a 7 & 6 victory. |
|
Match 3
 | | This game followed a similar pattern in that the visitors, Charlie Carr, President of Somerset Captains, along with David Steele, gelled very well and finally ran away with a winning margin of 5 & 4. |
|
Match 4
 | | From being two up with two to play David Kent and Larry Summers managed a half with the Somerset duo of Chris Warcup and John Williams to keep the overall score at 2 games each. |
|
Match 5
Both Peter Sealey and Peter Broomhead managed to keep their game together and saw of the late challenge from Bill Savage and Brian McCarthy of Somerset Captains to win this game for the hosts. |
Match 6
 | | The strong pairing of Trevor Hicks and Terry MacFarlane, Burnham Captains, was not quite strong enough on the day as they succumbed to the pairing of David White and Nigel Cheshire of Somerset by 5 & 4. |
|
Match 7
 | | This match also went to the Somerset Captains duo of Max Putnam and Peter Swan as they ran out winners by 3 & 2 over local Captains John Martin and Ken Goodwin. |
|
Match 8
 | | Once again the host Captains, Frank Ryan and Geoff Sloman, managed to turn a two up with two to play situation into a half with Richard Dore and Harvey Glasgow of Somerset. |
|
The Captains' Putter
 | At the evening meal, Club President, Mike Baker, tended apologies from Tony Hill’s absence at the table having to keep a prior appointment, welcomed the Somerset Captains to Burnham & Berrow Golf Club and trusted they had all enjoyed the course. He said the gales of yesterday would have posed different problems to those they had experienced today. In presenting the Captains Putter, donated by Wesley Wyatt and Peter Broomhead, to John Chillington, Captain of Somerset, and congratulating the Captains on their 4½ to 3½ victory Mike said that it is always a pleasure to see so many old faces around the room and, with respect, Charlie Carr’s, President of Somerset Captains.
The Burnham Captains were then invited to stand and take wine with their guests.
In response, John Chillington thanked Mike Baker for the warm welcome and for the company they enjoyed on the course. It is, he said, always a privilege to play Burnham & Berrow and to have come away today with a win, albeit a narrow one, adds that little extra to the day. John went on to pay tribute to Mark the Chef who laid on an excellent carvery that was enjoyed by all and concluded by asking his team to raise their glasses to the Burnham Captains.
