Worlebury Sets the Standards
On Wednesday 27th August 2008 Worlebury Golf Club challenged the Somerset Golf Captains to a friendly match to celebrate the Club's Centenary and what a great day it turned out to be.
The weather was good, the company was even better and the celebrations afterwards were in keeping with this grand occasion.
As expected the home team found the course a little easier to play and this was evident when the final scores were posted, however, there was not a word of disappointment spoken by either teams as they all sat down to their evening meal.
As for the games, well the Somerset Captains got off to a flying start when John Chillington, Captain, and Jim Hobday ran out 4 & 3 winners over Club Captain, Steve Rowlands and Martin Ford.
Charlie Carr, President, and Alan Shore could not get the better of Brian Evand an Brian Thomas going down by 5 & 3.
Trevor Jenkins, Vice President, and Ben Gliddon overcame strong opposition from Ron Jamieson and Rob Rogers before running away with a 5 & 3 win to put the Captains 2 - 1 ahead.
It was all downhill after that for the Captains when first Peter Clements and Peter Swann lost 2 & 1 to Wally Hartree and Bernard Slade.
Then Roger Gazzard and Rob Ford lost 3 & 2 to Kerry Allchurch and Harry Rowlands.
The same scorline followed as Bob Smith and Mike Nash lost to Jim Horn and Ivan Chesney.
Finally Brian Reeves and Ray Stanlake took a similar pounding from Eric Waghorn and Mike Usher-Clark.
This gave a final result of 6 - 2 to the Worlebury Team over the Somerset Captains.
Trevor Jenkins, Past Captain of Worlebury, had the honour of presenting the Club Captain with a Crystal Water Jug, suitably inscribed to mark this great occasion, as a token of gratitude from the Somerset Golf Captains for their co-operation over the years with our fixtures. Before doing so he congratulated Worlebury Golf Club, its members and staff on the progress the Club had made over recent years both on and off the golf course.
In the after dinner speeches both Captains were full of praise for the Green and Catering Staff and also mentioned that the spirit in which this game was played was excellent. This was certainly a day that will be remembered for many years to come.
Once again.... Congratulations Worlebury Golf Club on your Centenary.
