Devon take the Cream
Enmore Park Golf Club played host to this Annual fixture between Somerset Captains and Devon Captains and although the teams have changed quite a lot over the years the result of this match went very much the same way as before with Devon Captains walking away with the Trophy.
Firstly it must be said that the course was in excellent condition and once you trusted your putts then there was no excuse for missing them. Well done the Green Staff.
Somerset Captains got off to a fine start when Captain, John Chillington and Mick Bovington won 2 & 1 over Malcolm Jordain and Peter Dunstan.
Trevor Jenkins and David White found themselves four down to Mike Angelos and David Grieve after 5 holes even though they were only one over par at that stage. A couple of birdies, the 6th from David White and the 7th by Trevor managed to get it back to 2 down then Mike birdied the 8th to go three up. The end result was a 4 & 3 win for the Devon duo.
Charlie Carr, President, and Paul Hucker managed a half with Tony Jeffs and Brian Harris.
Iain Robertson and Graham Load had a similar half with Paul Creaven and Chris Morton.
Ben Gliddon and Richard Dore pulled off a win by 1 up against Richard Emery and John Burrow to put the Captains into a lead of 3 - 2.
David Rigby and David Norman were not so lucky by going down to Alec Gosling and Mike Badcock who finished 1 up.
Steve Butterfield and Mike Cockram salvaged a half with Trevor Ashforth and Roger Cooper to leave the match in the balance.
The final game of Brian Reeves, Secretary, and David Andow against David Milford and Lew Easter was the decider and it went to the Devon pairing by 2 & 1.
In presenting the Trophy to the Devon Captain, John Chillington thanked the Club for providing the venue and also mentioned the food that was of an excellent quality and enjoyed by all.
The Devon Captain, Malcolm responded with his usual range of frivilous good humoured short stories and taosts to Captains on both sides were well revceived. |
