 | 2008 AGM Report
This was the 46th AGM of the Somerset Golf Captains and although the number of Past Captains present were a little low it was nonetheless equally as entertaining and informative as before.
The President, Charlie Carr opened the meeting by announcing that this was his final official address having completed his three years in office uring which he has met, played with and formed many new friendships during this period. He said he had enjoyed every minute of his stint and thanked the membership for their support.
Brian Reeves delivered the Secretary’s report which touched upon the rising cost of meals at our matches and the problems he has experienced with some Captains crying off at the eleventh hour when selected for matches. Brian thanked those Captains who stepped in at the last moment to make up the numbers.
Brian went on to state that he would be stepping down from his role as Secretary/Treasurer as he would not be retiring from work as expected.
The Annual Dinner was notified as being held at the usual venue, Taunton Rugby Football Club on Friday 23rd January with the tickets will be priced at £25 and on a first come first served basis. Each Club was encouraged to place their order for a table as quickly as possible to ensure they are not disappointed. Trevor Jenkins will be heading the trio with Bill Hawker and Brian Reeves, charged with organising the Annual Dinner and details will be out shortly so watch this space.
On the financial front Brian stated that we still had a healthy balance despite subsidizing the Annual Dinner top the tune of around £850. There had been an increase in prices all round but we will continue to work on a non-profit basis.
John Chillington gave the outgoing Captains report stating that we had won as many matches as we had lost and all in all the year had been very successful with special mention of the recently introduced four counties match. He hoped that this fixture would remain as part of our calendar.
John went on to say the one person he had forgotten to mention when passing out thanks was his Wife and asked Trevor to mention his gratitude so this one is for you Joanna. “Thank You”.
John related to the pleasure he had throughout his year as Captain and that he also enjoyed every minute of it.
In concluding his speech John presented the Club Captain, Steve Rowlands, with a cheque from the Somerset Captains in appreciation of the courtesy extended to them for this event and in response Steve said that the money would be going towards his and the Ladies Captain’s Charity.

Handing Over The Gong
 | Outgoing President Charlie Carr handing over the Badge of Office to the incoming President, Trevor Jenkins, and reminding him of the £5 fine imposed should he forget to wear it at official functions.
Trevor, in accepting the office thanked the Captains for entrusting this post to him and went on to say how appropriate it was to be elected President at Worlebury Golf Club for it was here in 1990 that he was indeed Club Captain, a post he will always be grateful for. |
