Well, Well, Well and a Half
 | This match between the Somerset Golf Captains and Wells Past Captains was a carry over from the 5th August but was postponed because of torrential rains and early on today there appeared to be a repeat of that same situation. However, by the time we had all sat down and completed our light lunch the skies became a little brighted and at times even the sun shone down upon us as we set off down the damp fairways.
Two of the first three games went in favour of the Somerset Captains and the other game was halved but that was as good as it got for the visitors who managed to lose the remaining three games.
Game one was won by John Chillington, acting Captain, and Rob Ford with a 2 & 1 margin over Eric Loxton, Wells Captain of Captains, and Richard Booth, Club Captain.
Game two was very closly contested by Jim Worsley and Roy Parmiter who were one up playing the 16th but found themselves one down playing the 18th against David White and Richard Birch. The game finished all square though when David's putt on the last hole lipped out.
Trevor Jenkins, President of Somerset Captains, and Ben Gliddon, Captain of Somerset Captains, were also involved in a close contest for the first 12 holes but they eventually managed to get the better of Alan Shore and Kevin Squires finally running out with a winning margin of 4 & 2.
Les Kew and David Rich were full of praise for their opponents, George Davis and Adrian Lawrence, who never took their foot off the pedal and won 5 & 4.
The same result was suffered by Mike Usher-Clark and Mike Nash who found Steve Clark and Phil Slater too good for them on the day.
The final game faired no better for Somerset Captains when Rob Hirons and Tony Cope came up against the in form pair of Malcolm Terry and Steve Bouquet who again ran out winning by 5 & 4.
The day was rounded off with a fine Carvery and very pleasant banter between the two teams over the evening meal.
Respects were paid in memory of Marcus Irwin, Past Captains of Wells Golf Club, who passed away recently.
Alan Shore was thanked for organising a day that was enjoyed by all. |
