It Was The Best Yet !!!

The Somerset Golf Captains held their Annual Dinner on Friday 26th January 2007 at Taunton Rugby Football Club, Hyde Lane, Taunton, and not only was it another successful and entertaining evening but possibly the best yet. Every ticket was snapped up well in advance of this event which has become the most popular addition to our calendar.

Toastmaster, John Lambert, introduced the Top Table to the assembled Captains and the evening was in full swing once Trevor Jenkins, the Captains Secretary, had said Grace.

The President of Somerset Golf Captains, Charlie Carr, later proposed the Loyal Toast and also took wine with the eight new Club Captains who were present, namely, Charles Hole, Enmore Park, Bob Smith, Long Sutton, Paul Merrett, The Mendip, Mike Penn, Saltford, David Powell, Taunton & Pickeridge, Clive Wright,Stockwood Vale, Nigel Haigh, Oake Manor, and Paul Chesney, Taunton Vale. They were all welcomed to Somerset Golf Captains, received long applause from the other Captains and wished a successful term of office.

The Captain of Somerset captains, Colin Davies, took wine with the Top Table Guests, all Past Captains of Somerset Golf Captains and later, all Past, Present and Guest Secretaries.

Trefor Seaton, Past Captain of South Wales Coast Captains, proposed the toast to the Somerset Golf Captains, reflecting on the similar history of both our Golf Captains and the camaraderie that has built up since our inaugural meeting in 1997. He said the dedication of those charged with the management of the affairs of our Captains should be appreciated by all present as these meetings do not happen without a great deal of time and effort put in voluntarily by its officers.
Trefor then asked all Captains to stand, raise their glasses and toast the Somerset Golf Captains. He then sat down to good applause.

Colin Davies, Captain of Somerset, in responding, thanked Trefor Seaton on behalf of the Somerset Golf Captains for his kind address and wished the South Wales Coast Captains and all other County Golf Captains a successful year ahead.

Colin Davies then told the Captains how very proud and honoured he is to be appointed as their Captain and how he is looking forward to welcoming the challenge of the busy programme for 2007. Colin then went on to say that his year has already started by attending Annual Dinners at Sussex Captains at Brighton, Surrey Captains at The Wentworth, and Hampshire Captains at Petersfield. Each of these invitations had been most enjoyable and he had been treated with generous hospitality on every occasion by the respective County Golf Captains.

Colin thanked Trevor Jenkins, the Secretary, for making the introduction to his Captaincy easier by taking care of the detail and making all the arrangements for travel, accommodation and introductions. Trevor was also praised for the quality of our website which has set the benchmark and is the envy of most other Golf Captains Societies.

Taunton Rugby Football Club were the next to receive the Captains praise for hosting this Dinner, our fifth, and were congratulated for their contribution towards the success of our evening and on the quality and standards they provide for us. The Dinner Committee were thanked for their input, ensuring that everything went well but said that without the support of those Captains present none of this would be possible.

There was again reflection on the history of Somerset Golf Captains and the Captain said that over the last 25 years we have been blessed with having only three Secretary/Treasurers namely, Harry Bowles, MBE, 1982-1988, Ken Hinchliffe, 1988 -1997, and Trevor Jenkins,1997- to date although Trevor will be stepping down at the end of 2007.

Colin then asked the Captains to stand, raise their glasses and toast the Guests. The Captain then sat down to much applause.

The Reverend Martin Morgan, Vicar of the Village of Rottingdean, Sussex, then responded on behalf of the Guests. His humourous anecdotes, many of which the Captains could easily identify with themselves, kept the gathering amused throughout his address and there should be no empty seats in his village church if his sermons are delivered with the same warmth and friendly composure. After asking the Guests to stand and toast the Somerset Golf Captains he sat down to a very warm and and extremely long applause from a delighted audience.

The loudest applause of the evening was again reserved for the Chef, Tony and his Kitchen Staff, Pat and the charming waitresses, who were invited in to take their deserved thanks from the Captain and the standing applause from all present.

There will be several photos posted on this page as soon as they arrive on my desk.
Meanwhile... watch this space.
