A s Good As It Gets

The Mendip Golf Club hosted our Spring Meeting on Thursday 12th April and gave Colin Davies, the Captain of the Somerset Golf Captains, the best possible start to his year of office. The weather was exceptionally warm for this time of the year and the course was in magnificent condition. The few members who failed to turn up, for various reasons, missed this very fine event where the banter more than lived up to its usual high standard.

The Secretary, Trevor Jenkins, thanked The Mendip Golf Club, its Committee and Members for hosting this event and paid tribute to the hospitality shown to all Past and Present Captains who were privileged to be among those taking part on the day. Hayley, the Caterer, well supported by her willing helpers, was praised for laying on an excellent carvery and there was no shortage of service from the bar, in fact, we were treated very well by all.

Eighty-four Captains played in this Chinese Greensome format and although the conditions were good they found it difficult to score. Whether it was the heat or just bad putting it was hard to finish with a lot of points. Forty points was the best returned followed by a 39, 38 and several on 36 points and the prizewinners will be listed later on this page.

Our Guests from Dorset Captains Roger Young and Derek Grimes, and from Wiltshire Captains, Malcolm Nixon and Tom Sherry, were given a warm welcome from the membership and it was indeed a pleasure to see them at The Mendip Golf Club.

The Secretary then introduced the record number, eleven, of new Captains in attendance who had taken office since our last meeting. Each were invited to stand and be recognized and they were also given loud applause and best wishes from the floor who have already been there and have the T shirts to show for it. Among them was the host Captain, Paul Merrett, who gave a belated welcome to the Captains, hoping they had all enjoyed their visit. Paul was then presented with a cheque from Colin Davies, the Captains of Somerset Captains as a token of our appreciation to The Mendip Golf Club for hosting our Spring Meeting.

Colin Davies then addressed the meeting and in thanking all Captains for attending this meeting said that he hoped to meet and play with as many different partners during the season as was possible. Thanks were extended to Trevor Jenkins, Secretary, for making all the arrangements that ensured the success of the day. Colin then a flurry of aviation stories that kept the Captains amused and finally wished everyone a successful golfing year.

Trevor Jenkins then closed the meeting by thanking all who had stayed on until the end, and there were at least 75 still Captains enjoying the hospitality, and related to the importance of their enthusiastic support, the very ingredient that will ensure that the future of the Somerset Golf Captains will continue to be bright.

Honours Board

We only ever take this honours board to our Spring and Autumn Meetings these days but it is worth noting that it was presented to the Somerset Golf Captains by Bob Burns and Harry Bowles both of The Mendip Golf Club many years ago and carries a great deal of history dating back to 1962, the year we were formed.
