Meeting The Cream of Cornwall
 | Launceston Golf Club played host to this meeting between the Cornwall Golf Captains and Somerset Golf on Tuesday 24th April and what a treat it was to see so much lush green grass on the course despite the lack of rain. The course was in excellent condition and presented a good test of golf for all the Captains no matter what handicap they played off. Congratulations to the Greenkeeping Staff. The weather could not have been better with a slight breeze, reasonably humid and although overcast we were spared the heavy rain that was forecast.
The day commenced with a light meal and plenty of good humoured banter, the latter of which continued throughout the day and well into the evening.
The match got under way at 1.00 pm with the Captains Party of Derek Watts, Captain of Cornwall Captains playing with host Captain Paul Hicks, against Colin Davies, Captain of Somerset Captains and partner Trevor Hicks. This was a closely contested game which went to the visitors.
Secretaries party, Doug Richards and Laurie Sheppard, of Cornwall, playing Trevor Jenkins and The Tony Pendray of Somerset then teed off. There was never much in this game either with Cornwall being one up at the turn. From there on Somerset were always chasing as the home team pulled three holes up on the 11th. Although Somerset fought back well, mainly through Tony, to be one down playing the 18th Cornwall always had that little extra in their locker. Laurie was striking the ball well and Doug was striking it even better. One game each at this stage.
David Lawton and Lou Courtney were the Cornwall Captains who entertained Brian Reeves and Bill Hawker of Somerset and with both pairings playing well there was never likely to be much in it but the home team nudged ahead and closed the game out on the 16th hole to put Cornwall Captains 2 – 1.
Charles Uren and John Crowson halved their game against David Kent and Denis Compton of Somerset in the fourth match and the fifth match went to Somerset when John Wilde and Peter Broomhead overcame strong opposition from the Cornwall pairing of Mike Rogers and Gerald Rowe.
The match was now level.
Ben Gliddon and Bob Smith of Somerset could not overcome the challenge of Ryan Rowe and Eric Thomas in match six but Duncan Hughes and Rob Ford, Somerset, managed to bring the match back to all square with a win over Gordon Kirk and Peter Richard of Cornwall.
It all depended on the outcome of the final game between Roy Parmiter and Chris Warcup of Somerset and Mike Gee and Brian Rimes of Cornwall. As expected, Brian and Mike were too good on the day thus giving the Cornwall team the decisive win that enabled them to retain the Trophy that was kindly donated by Tony Pendray of Somerset.
The usual high spirits and good camaraderie ensued over an excellent meal presented by the Catering Staff with Mike and Kate Ingram, Emma and Hannah looking after us most efficiently and courteously throughout our visit to Launceston Golf Club.
We, the Somerset Golf Captains, thank you Doug for arranging this venue and for entertaining us so magnificently on our travels and congratulations on your win. It was a perfect start to our season. We wish you all the best for the remainder of the season.
